I think this one falls on the "effects of the warehouse". At one if my stops this morning:
Driver politely asked if he could drop his trailer in the dock and park in the corner to take his 10. He was going to be out of hours before the load was ready. I looked over and saw he had been in the dock for 5 hours. That really sucks, we've all been there.
So the manager said he couldn't do it and proceeded to laugh. A rough deal, clearly the company driver didn't want to violate his H.O.S. Yet the warehouse manager wasn't willing to accommodate him. (Mind you the driver was dressed well. He had presented himself in a professional manner.)
To me it was an eye opener. Here's a guy that has sat around, probably longer than 5 hours, and he can't even leave now without being illegal. Yet he's plenty rested and wants to make money.
The kicker... after him and I talked some, he was all over a paper log. Claimed to never used them before, and that if he had them, he wouldn't be taking a 10.
Just an interesting morning experience.
Then I thought for a while, how many of us on paper would have asked that question? Or even thought about taking a 10 hr break, or 8 if you could do it.
