Here's my plan. Get stickers "DRIVER USING E-LOGS" Put one in driver window, one in passenger window. Keep using the book or loose leaf, whichever you prefer.
Get pulled over? Sorry, I'm using the book this week, E-LOG shorted out and is getting repaired. Should have it back in a week or two.
    OK, have a nice day.

What must a driver do if there is an electronic logging device (ELD) malfunction?

If an ELD malfunctions, a driver must:

    1. Note the malfunction of the ELD and provide written notice of the malfunction to the motor carrier within 24 hours;
    2. Reconstruct the record of duty status (RODS) for the current 24-hour period and the previous 7 consecutive days, and record the records of duty status on graph-grid paper logs that comply with 49 CFR 395.8, unless the driver already has the records or retrieves them from the ELD; and
    3. Continue to manually prepare RODS in accordance with 49 CFR 395.8 until the ELD is serviced and back in compliance.

What must a motor carrier do if there is an electronic logging device (ELD) malfunction?

If an ELD malfunctions, a motor carrier must:

    1. Correct, repair, replace, or service the malfunctioning ELD within eight days of discovering the condition or a driver’s notification to the motor carrier, whichever occurs first; and
    2. Require the driver to maintain paper record of duty status (RODS) until the ELD is back in service.

I get asked for my logs about once every 3-4 years, shouldn't be a problem.

Actually thats not correct. If you are using the truck for Persoanl use, you do not have to track the IFTA miles at all. Since they are Personal use, they are not subject to any tax.
And yes, when you are off duty and your truck is on Personal use, ALL regualations are off.

Just like those that use a truck 100% of the time for pulling 5th Wheels campers. they are not subject to any rules at all.

and it seems i am not the only one that has issues with GPS and other aspects of this new ELD.
    Read it here:
Supreme Court could decide June 8 whether to hear ELD lawsuit
Supreme Court could decide June 8 whether to hear ELD lawsuit
The prospect of tracking not just driver hours of service, but the location of a truck and driver, lies at the heart of a challenge to the electronic logging device mandate.

Ifta applies to any vehicle with commercial registration over 26k lbs that crosses state lines.

Yes IFTA applies to the vehicle, but whether or not i have to keep track of my miles while using it for personal use is different. and that would be not much different then using a car and getting reimbursed for mileage from my boss or something similar. Keeping track of miles over a quarter does not pinpoint my location and time, Which the ELD will do.
it still goes back to the same point, invasion of privacy. its a question of the Government, yet again (anyone listening to the news lately????) of breaking my 4th amendment right. Enough.... Get the Government out of my life. Sorry.. Safety is one thing, invasion and giving up my constitutional rights are quite a different thing.
Figure out a better way to do the safety part.

I TOTALY do not advice VDO Roadlog.
    DO NOT Recomend this product.
It is slow in reactions and inputs. The whole interface and promptings looks and behave like 2000 devices. The telematics for this device are almost zero.
Data transfer between device, computer, central sistem, and back it is a real adventure and time consuming. In case you do not grant acces to your driver to CONECT to central system. To correct on the spot legally permitted corrections, then you are f*****.
The location it is enabling the closest preloaded VDO locations with accuracy of 3 feets. But in case if you are in big lot. You can see reported to different zipcodes locations. Yet you are in the same spot.becouse it assigning location based on VDO data and not real data.
It also lacking in all positibile legal options. 60/7 or 70/8 rule. You have just one rule. Split sleeper birth, yard move, safe haven rule, etc.
If you gave a lot of activity in 7-8 days. The printer it is a joke. You will early go through 1-2 paper rolls for one inspection. The DVIR it is a TOTALY nightmare to edit if you have missed to manually input in the device . And soo many more reasons not to buy it.
In case you are not satifaied withs service or device. Surprise !!! You can NOT return it!!!
So basically you just trou away 750$.
Do not be in the same situation like me .
The Continental Corp looks like it is not standing behind this product as another ELD providers do.
NO I TOTALY do not Recomand this PRODUCTS.

If anyone is keeping up with the latest news - DON'T BUY YOUR ELD YET!!
we may get a 2 year grace period before they go into effect and who knows from there.
there is a bill floating around in congress that is being attached to the cattle haulers and small OOs that if passed will give up 2 more years BEFORE we have to go complaint on the ELD, and in those 2 yrs, the ELDs may change all together.
SO HOLD OFF and WATCH THE NEWS

    OLDSKOOLERnWV Thanks this.
