The Keep Trucking app is the same as a paper log in the eyes of the DOT. Companies can set policy that is tougher than the regulations, just not more lenient. I tried the KT app, couldn't stand it. Glad I don't have to keep logs on paper or ELD anymore, although paper was simple.
In driveaway I wouldn't want to use anything but paper, no easy way to carry a printer and the non-ELD compliant apps (like KT and Big Road without the ecm connection) still legally require a printer if the roadside officer wants to push it. As for KT specifically, they have the guidance built into the app suggesting the display is sufficient, however they edited the official guidance as found at the FMCSA website and published in the Federal Register which still requires the driver to print their logs if requested by the officer.
As a compliance consultant I will say the apps make log auditing much easier, and if used correctly they almost eliminate the low hanging fruit for the DOT, namely form and manner violations.

I had 0 training on how to use paper logs. I’ve never had a violation, so I must have figured it out. Can only imagine if the wheel holders of today had to resort to paper when their ELD has a seizure. Probably just park their rig until someone can come to the rescue.

Part of the problem is a complete lack of understanding of the HOS, along with a ton of misinformation as far as what is/isn't required. The one piece of info I've heard officers comment on more than anything else is the shipping document number or commodity & shipper...almost surprised I have it written on there like they expected to write it up and are bummed when everything is in order.

Thanks y'all! I did some research and was able to give info to my boss about which ELD's we should use for the trucks. Still haven't heard a word back from any authorities about how it should be handled. I told my boss that I just come to y'all first because I get a quicker response.
Lepton1 Thanks this.
