The VDO Roadlog sells online for 544$ per unit.(that is without negociating for a fleet discount)
That one has zero monthly fee.
So the numbers in that article are way off.

And then you have all of the independent drivers, or those working from brokers, who do not encourage compliance...
As to the article, it is a very pessimistic article, and makes things sound as bad as possible.
For instance, I can outfit a fleet their size with the KeepTrucking system for about $12k the first year. A little more for the few drivers who don't already have a smartphone.
Also, they include the software integration costs as part of the Mandatory costs, and that is silly!
That is the extra investment they have chosen to do for business efficiency, to integrate with their Dispatch system.
That is nice, and very logical, but not part of the mandate, which is simply to have a device that ties into the truck computer and records certain information.
All the IFTA tracking and Dispatch integration and location tracking, and even cellular data access, is extra for their benefit.
And they are smart to figure out how to use the opportunity to upgrade their whole operation, but then to whine about how much the extra stuff costs them is disingenuous.daf105paccar Thanks this. -
Another paper hater spurred that comment. I'm sure you know that but wanted to use it to show your ignorance. Well it workedLast edited: Jan 28, 2017

I'm against the eld mandate but when the opponents come up with nonsensical arguments like that it hurts their cause IMO.Ke6gwf Thanks this. -
Years ago when I pulled from VT to AZ and back I'd get out there on the 40 and really let 'er unwind, speedo only went to 80, but I'd have her well past that, many a time (gasp!).....Late at night, I'd stop out there in AZ & NM along the way, lay my head down, enjoy the peacefulness of the quiet still night and thank the Lord that I live in a free country, free to think what I want, to drive what I want, to have what I want, and free to do what I want without government restriction and oppression...Yup, that was before many of you on here were even a gleam in your daddy's eye, so it'd be hard for some of you to grasp the concept of what I'm saying.....
Like I said previously, you guys that keep screaming for more and more government regulation and oppressive mandates, you'll regret it one day.....Personally, I wish Kalifornica would just secede already and take all of the socialist/liberal/progressive/hollyweird wingnuts with them to their perceived socialist utopia and please leave the rest of this great freedom loving nation alone...7-UP, BoostedTeg, Sublime and 9 others Thank this. -

And then you have the flip side of stupid people trying to legislate things they don't understand.
But when we hate on the people pushing the new laws, and ignore the people doing the stupid things, we will just keep getting more laws, because by our inaction (and often, example of breaking the law), we allow and encourage the activity that brings about the next layer of laws.
I know I could drive safer and less fatigued if I could simply drive until I get tired, sleep until I wake, and then drive again, but too many people would drive as long as Red Bull and coffee and No Doze and what ever other pills are popular now, would let them, and they make the news, so that activity is cracked down on, and then they find that people are getting around the laws, so they figure out better ways to verify their compliance (weigh station cameras, FasTrac records, receipts, etc), then they notice that direct truck monitoring equipment is very common and affordable, and so since none of the previous methods worked to stop the laws being flaunted, they mandate ELDs for all.
And later when they discover how the ELDs are being cheated, they will add another layer of laws.
I am not in favor of all this, but this is how we get all these laws, because we don't police our own industry, and encourage illegal behavior.
I point to Ham Radio as an example.
We have existed as a self-policing entity since pretty much the beginning of Radio, and we control large swaths of what is now extremely valuable bandwidth (it would auction for literally billions of dollars to telecommunications and cell companies), and (except for the stupid lazy truckers trying to steal our 11 meter band with out putting a little work into getting their Ham license lol) amazingly, it is still free to use for us, without government oversight, because we follow the rules, and encourage everyone else to follow the rules, and bring down enforcement action on anyone who refuses to follow the rules.
This keeps us free and able to continue developing new technologies and exploring radio, not to mention providing important public services in large events and disasters.
But trucking is so focused on finding ways around the rules to get another mile, or to be able to do things "your way", that it is only to be expected that more and tighter rules will continue to be added, and instead of taking proactive action to stop what brings about the rules, we batch and moan and complain about "them" and all the laws they are imposing on us, and it makes it really easy to ignore what we are bringing on ourselves.
Have you ever read the warnings in the manual for some tool or appliance, and seen a lot of stupid things being warned about?
It is because someone has done those stupid things, and so they had to put the warning in.
You can look at the laws the same way.
People were doing stupid things, and so to protect the society, they had to pass a law about it.
And as much as you all cry about freedom and the American way being lost, you have to remember that the American Way is based on the Constitution, which gives everyone the right to enjoy life, and to have the ability to do what they want, AS LONG AS IT DOES NOT INFRINGE ON THE RIGHTS OF OTHERS.
When you are driving on a Public roadway, your actions affect others, and if your actions are deemed unsafe by the People, then it is proper to infringe on your rights, just as far as is needed to protect the rights of others.
We are all human, so that balance is often off, but it is better than anarchy or dictatorship...Cruisin thru, Chasingthesky and daf105paccar Thank this. -

So you use the undeniably bad stats of some of the biggest carriers (so the most possible drivers to break laws), who also happen to have some of most lax hiring qualifications (which means lots of inexperienced drivers), and also have dispatchers that push the drivers to follow the prescribed route and schedule exactly, and you are blaming those stats on elogs??
Find me some stats that show speeding tickets per thousand drivers, comparing those on elogs and those on paper, then we can talk.
I could show you the stats of my current company, to prove how much safer Peoplenet makes you compared to Swifts Qualcomm, but it wouldn't be any more accurate loltucker and daf105paccar Thank this.
