Thoughts on ELD data being used to dictate freight pricing? Or am I just paranoid?

Pricing varies wildly; freight rates provided by the boards as index pricing come from a variety of sources, but are primarily derived from data sold by the factoring companies.

Yes, I am aware that plenty of info comes out of the factoring side. That doesn't explain the daily rate swings on a particular lane. To me, there is another factor influencing this. These brokerages have entire departments dedicated to data collection of all sorts. That info is being used somewhere in their operations to likely increase margin.

At some point someone will buy the data from a ton of the eld mfgrs and try and make their own brokerage or load board, heck, keep truckin already does this.

The issue at present is its all mostly incompetent uninformed people doing it right now, that will eventually change.

Can you clarify how ELD data would be used to influence rates? Are you saying the location data would be used to indicate the number of trucks in a given area and used as leverage during price negotiation?

If so that's already happening with DAT load to truck ratio, but ultimately the market is the market. You can use the data to make more informed decisions (e.g. It looks like there are less loads per truck in this region, I'm going to try and push down our cost to the truck based on that data. Or the opposite Load to Truck is going up, I better pay a little higher early in the day for a good carrier rather than wait and get smoked at 3:00PM), but ultimately it is supply and demand that impacts price.
