Here is another piece of the puzzle... You get an ELD that hooks to the ECM, look at the manufacture and see if they require their ELD to work in conjunction with an electronic device. For example, they test their ELD only on Apple products, but it is not certified with Android. Watch out for model numbers also.. If in doubt write the manufacture and get something in writing stating your electronic device will work with their ELD.

If a combination of technology or sub-components is needed to meet the technical specifications, the manufacturer must register all of the components together as an ELD device. For example, if ELD capabilities are provided through an app running on a specific smart phone, the provider must register the multiple devices or components. A sample statement might be: We certify that our model XXX, used in conjunction with an (phone or device type/model) conforms to the ELD specifications).
