On minor nit that I'm not positive on. Just because he holds a CDL does not mean he 'needs' it. If his service truck is less than 26k lbs, the way I read the regulation, is he would still be good at a 150 mile radius. Am I wrong on that?
@NorthernMechanic , about how much does your service truck weigh anyway? (to get an idea if it's a CDL required CMV down here or not...)

Yeah,I don't think he needs a CDL for that truck. Were just old farmers, always have a max CDL from a young age, just handy to have.Never know when you have to jump in a rig,and go somewhere.I'm retired from over 45 years on the road, still keep all my stuff current,though,CDL-A,haz-mat twic, etc. Ya never know...

That's what my door sticker says. Last time I went across the scales I was about 8,200 kg (around 18,000 lbs). I've got no crane or welders but I do have lube tanks and its an extended cab with I think a 10' body.

His is a straight cab,no lube tanks, but he does carry a lot of junk in the back.I'm sure you know how fast stuff can accumulate,if you don't keep after it.
I don't have a pic of his current truck, this is his old 99 F550.Had to update, that was a good truck, but was 2wd,got tired of getting stuck.

Depends on which state he is hauling in and what he is hauling at that time. Also, you could answer it this way: What is he going to hand the officer or inspector if asked? A non-commercial license or a CDL?

But again, that does not matter when talking about if the local radius is 100 or 150 air miles. All that matters is the gvwr of the vehicle. If it's 26,001 or more lbs then it's 100 air mile radius. If it's between 10,001 and 26,000 lns it's 150 air mile radius. If it's less than 10,000 lbs, it's not regulated as a cmv.

And if the state allows 250 miles intrastate, and you never leave the state, then you have a 250 mile radius to play with. The state also might allow a 14 or 16 hour work day, which if you never leave the state could be beneficial to you to know. THAT is why the state matters. Not all states mirror the federal regs for intrastate.
