Thanks drivers for the responses. I have not set up with JJKeller but I have the paperwork to do so. My next step is to sign the contract with them and send it back. Then finish it up with the sales representative by phone. I think I'll get a tablet with my cell carrier. It will be cheaper than buying from JJKeller.
I detest the idea of having to do this but I think it's wiser to do it now than later.
Here are the prices from JJKeller.
Logging device....includes ELD, GPS antenna, wiring harness and Y-cord. $299.
JJ Keller Compliace tablet $279. You can use your own and avoid this charge.
Monthly fees. This is with their tablet which includes data charges. $25.45 for one driver.
Supply your own tablet the monthly fee is $7.95. AT&T will charge me $20 for the data charge but the tablet is only $11 with contract. Your cell provider may have a better deal.
There is a minimum monthly fee of $20. So if you use your own tablet the $7.95 would not be up to the minimum but they have other services such as Automated fuel tax for IFTA which is $13 a month that can be added to bring it up above the $20 minimum.
They also offer log scanning and truck navigation for additional fees.
I've drove for over 15 years and never had a log book violation.
Now I'm looking at probably $400+ to get set up and probably $40-$50 or so a month fees.
One month of fees would probably cover my yearly log book cost. Not only that but I'll still have to print out my logs for my records for IRS purposes or save them in another form.
So much for the lie about saving me money that the government has stated.

I hope that drivers understand that come Dec.17 Big Road and Keep Truckin or Daily logs will not be accepted unless you have the module connected to the Data port of your truck. You will not be able to edit anything. It will act just like a Qualcom. Once you move it will go to drive mode. Even today you could have a problem if a DOT guy wants to see your phone. You put in DOT inspection mode and he can see your logs. BUT what if he wants to take your phone inside. I would never let him take it way. He could look at your call and search history and see lots of stuff. FMCSA has really screwed up. The US Government has lots of people on staff that could have written specific specs for these devices. They should all meet a standard. Of course all those modules are made in China or maybe some place worse. What do you do if he device quits? I think you only get 3 days of paper logs before you are out of compliance. I bet many of the device makers will go bankrupt or just move on to marketing something else.

big road and keep truckin both have a good product used both! the main detail is monthly cost also how does the user interface works!... I talked to keller not impresed cost being #1. Big road is 234.00 per year ! I know of a few others that the monthly cost is about 15.00 a month however that is a 3yr contract!....Currently trying Geowiz 175.00 for equipment no monthly cost cheapest so far ! However the software is not up to speed just yet.......When the final implementation goes into effect the DOT will give you a code.. you enter it on your device then they will review it on their equipment...leaving you with your tablet or phone!
-
Where did you hear that about the DOT going to give you a code? Also them reviewing your equipment?
The DOT is not and will not certify which units are compliant. They certainly should but it's totally buyer beware.
It's all on us as the carrier to make sure the units are compliant with the rules.
Maybe I misunderstood what you were referring to. If so please explain. -

that will be implemented 2018 so they will not have to take your device. what i meant was they will be able to view your logs from the patrol car or scale house without you having to hand over your device.....phone ,tablet, ect.....mainly to address the privacy issue

well part of this refers to an article in Overdrive about how automated the DOT and carriers will be .....I will have to do some research to find it! however the issue with the bluetooth link... I discussed with an ELD manufacturer and gleaned some insight as the overall access The DOT will have
-
No, they may want to do something like that, but I think the best they will ever get is the ability to receive an email from the ELD provider with the PDF of the required time frame logs.
As for the bluetooth link, that's a very short range (30 feet or so, if lucky up to 50) wireless communications link. Nothing more or less. Nothing magical about it.
