Trust me, turning 30 a few months ago was painful LMAO! In fact, it was the only "depressing" b-day to date thus far in my life.

But I'm still a "young at heart" 30 year old...

Family is VERY important with this. My father is long gone -- passed away in January 1984 at age 77 after living almost 8 years with Alzheimers. In the early stage, before we were fully aware of what was happening, we saw Daddy get into little scrapes -- a light standard here, a curb there, and so on. But one of the biggest pleasures of his day was going to McDonald's for a burger and coffee at lunch time. (Mom was still working.) We knew Daddy shouldn't be driving... that sooner or later he was going to hurt someone... but none of us had the heart to take his license. It would have broken his heart.

So, here I am -- newly married and thinking about having our first baby -- picturing an elderly driver hitting us and perhaps taking the life of my child. Then thinking about Daddy and his increasing difficulties driving.

I called the state police... explained the situation -- our family thought Daddy was no longer fit to drive, but we loved him too much to take away his independence. The trooper talked with me for a while and advised that he would handle the situation.

Shortly thereafter, my father received a letter stating something to the effect that he was selected from a group of senior citizens to re-take the drivers exam prior to renewing his license.

I guess Daddy knew he wouldn't pass because he never took the test. Instead, he just gave up driving. I give the trooper an A+ for the way he handled it. Instead of getting into a push-pull situation with the license, he gave my father the chance to prove his abilities. Then it became my father's choice.

Life is hard sometimes. To this day I carry some sadness about what I did. But I also know it's much easier to cope with reporting my father to the state police than it would be facing a family grieving over the loss of a loved one because we turned a blind eye to the situation.

I just pray that Daddy forgives me.
