395.15 (f) Reconstruction of records of duty status. Drivers are required to note any failure of automatic on-board recording devices, and to reconstruct the driver's record of duty status for the current day, and the past 7 days, less any days for which the drivers have records, and to continue to prepare a handwritten record of all subsequent duty status until the device is again operational.

 

When I drove with a different company my satellite system crashed, therefore I had to do a paper log. I only had to log things that happened after the system crashed. The reason that is so is because any logs entered into the system before the crash were transmitted to the company already. If stopped by DOT I would present my paper logs and have my electronic logs faxed to them.
