If/when I get pulled over I always have everything ready before they have a chance to ask. Why? The element of surprise. If I've got it ready for them, then (after they run me through the system) they'll see I'm just a prepared motorist. Hasn't failed me yet.

...plus the look on their face is pretty priceless to me. :)

I've tried that before and usually get the "BTDT, eh?" response from them. So, I just wait 'til they ask and only give them what they ask for IF (and that is a big IF) I am required to have it with me. If they ask for anything I'm NOT required to have, I don't have it.

I learned that the hard way.

I got a new truck with Lonestar and they fedexed the license plate and registration to my house. I left the house and forgot the plates and paperwork. Had my brother send it to our Houston terminal but I got pulled in Louisiana. They checked my temp registration and was going to let me go until I opened my mouth about it being expired....... yeah I know.... lol

$50 out of my pocket for a temp registration for LA good for 48 hours.

Until you've read for yourself and understand the rules of the game we're playing, you're stuck playing by somebody else's interpretation. That other person will always skew the rules to THEIR favor (at your expense) whenever possible, and unless YOU know what rules apply to the situation, you're up a creek. There are quite a few exceptions and exemptions offered in the FMCSA regs, but it is up to YOU to know which ones are applicable to your situation. For example, the LEO on the side of the road won't tell you about § 396.7(b) when he stops you 1/2 mile after your tire blew out, and the next exit is in sight with a tire shop right there on the corner. If YOU don't know the exemption exists allowing you to move to a safe place to have the defect which occurred while en route fixed, he'll write you up for driving on the blown tire. The company will use the regs to their favor in a similar manner, only telling you about the ones that help THEM, conveniently leaving out any reference to any regs you might use against them in their effort to make you do something you don't want to do.

Read that little green book. It contains the rules of this here game we're playing. You either know 'em so that you can bend them to your own favor, or you don't know them and you play by whatever suits those who have "informed" you.
