There is a "grey"area in the DOT times that allows you to drive on line 5 under certain conditions.
    1. If you run out of hours while at a customer and they didn't allow you to stay on their property to finish your break, you may off duty drive to the nearest safe haven with an EMPTY TRAILER AND NOT UNDER DISPATCH. That is, you don't have a pre plan.

Now, your company may not allow that per their company rules, but, you can call and ask them. It's not a well known stipulation, but it is there for that exact stipulation. Don't abuse it tho, CLOSEST safe haven: rest area, truck stop, etc.

CYA and talk to your safety department.

Line 5 is for personal conveyance and you cannot have a trailer as attached.

Safe haven is for class 1 explosiv

There is no gray area. Line 5 is for personal conveyance and you cannot have a trailer attached.

Safe haven is for class 1 explosives only.

OP it isn't a huge deal your log department will need to note why you went over for audit purposes. Anytime we go over here we have to call. It's not a huge deal. I've been over my 14 on breakdown on duty or it went to driving going across parking lot and had to call.

I aint going to crit this trip or this Driver Mack. I can show a little favoritism now and then.

I say this. In all my years I have had one perfect 10 hour trip from Seabrook NH to Baltimore travel centers Md 9 minutes and 20 seconds to the good when I pulled the parking brakes on my 10 hour day.

I ran over a few minutes past the 11 once (Omnitracs). I wasn't worried about. Approved the logs and by morning, someone in safety made a minor fix that required me to re-approve. No big deal. Nothing was said. But I suspect every company is different.

Just to warn you, the traffic thing is open for interpretation by the enforcement officer, the guidance from the FMCSA is NOT binding. AND I think it is limited to one event per week.

THIS means just because you were stuck in traffic, means you are "stuck" because of a shutdown on your side of the road, not a slowdown because of people being idiots to see what happen so the 2 hour exception can be a violation.
