Larryh31 had it right!
Google CDL practice test! Make sure to find at least 4 different practice tests, and make sure they are current. Of course, it might just be easier to read the CDL booklet! But the practice tests will make you feel more comfortable when taking the real test.

There is no shame in choking on a permit test... The convoluted wording of those questions can fluctuate anywhere from Byzantine to Talmudic...
I studied thoroughly for the basic tests: GK, air brakes, and combination vehicles. At the last minute before testing I decided to take tankers and doubles/triples just cause they were free, even though I had never looked at those materials... Sure enough, I passes everything BUT CV, a section whose material heavily overlaps both D/T and AB which I aced...Oh well, I went back the next day and got it no problem...

I watched a guy spend 3 weeks trying to get his permit.
While another failed his driving skills test 4 times over a 9 day period.
Alabama will allow you to take it (permit test) as often as needed. So long as you have the money. I do believe they have a 3 time a day limit. -

I have failed the "pretrip inspection" part of the test THREE TIMES!!! That woman at the DMV makes me so nervous I can't even BEGIN to think! Once I get behind the wheel it is a cakewalk! I can do the driving with no problem at all. It's just all the EXACT, SPECIFIC names that this woman wants, and recalling them with her STARING at me that makes me "freeze".
