Hi im new to this whole trucking world ive been arounds trucks love the road. Im having this situation where i just started the mentors phase with swift and just found out my 8 year old son will being having surgery done to his mouth and throat on December 17th in Florida. Drs said it could potentially be life threatening and i need to be there. Does anyone know if you can leave during the mentor phase at swift without getting terminated for situations like this. I live in texas and my kids live with their mom in Florida(we are separated). The appointment was just made yesterday and now im just freaking out because they have always mentioned the possibility of surgery but I wouldn't have thought so early. He has speech problems due to his tongue being stuck to the bottom of his jaw and to the back of the throat. Please if anyone can help with information

If it’s an emergency I don’t see a reason why they wouldn’t.
You need to contact your driver leader ASAP and talk to them.WildTiger1990, LoSt_AgAiN, Lepton1 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Don;t even think about it. Just GO take care of your boy. IF the doctors dare speak the words Life threatening, THEY REALLY must be stressed about that. And so you should as well.
This is not the time to be gallivanting around the USA while your Boy potentially dies alone. Go be with him.
That tongue cannot be stuck anywhere. Especially as you describe it. It will kill him. There is another reason as well. Tongues by design cannot be stuck or trapped anywhere because it will eventually create mental illness and drive the person crazy. It has to be cut free and fixed from being stuck. The positions you describe makes life incredibly hard for the boy. I cannot even imagine.
Any company that dares give you flak might as well be told where they can stick it. Your Boy needs you and all others able to be with him in this point in life. It might be all he gets. I prefer to look at a bright future with everything fixed proper.LoSt_AgAiN Thanks this. -

Go forth and be with your kid Daddy. There will be a thousand employers for you if this one has a hairball about it.70’Nova and FloridaRaisedTexasMade956 Thank this. -
I understand your concerns as a parent, you want to take care of them. I counsel you with the reasoning that there are certain times in life people need you. And so you go.
My driver packed her car ready for battle at the hospital should the heart doctor sent me there earlier today but instead I have several more tests next week plus monitors and what not coming to me in the mail. If there is a problem to be fixed and we think there is... the surgery will happen approx Jan next year at the hospital. Literally no big deal.FloridaRaisedTexasMade956 Thanks this. -
If for some reason you get fired for this check back here right away. @Chinatown knows who's hiring. It's kind of a hobby for him and he's hooked up a lot of guys with new jobs.
If the do fire you for wanting to be with your son you're better off away from them anyway. A new employer wouldn't hold that against you.
Let us know what happens.LoSt_AgAiN, D.Tibbitt, Tx Countryboy and 5 others Thank this. -
As a trainee you not assigned a dl till you get your own truck.
You have a driver developmental leader that watches over you during the training phase and who you report to on any issues. You should report to him/her on what's going on. And how long you gonna take off.
Talk to your mentor too
Just don't jump off the truck cause swift will say you quit then.
@Lepton1 use to be a trainer with swift
Wonder if he had any experience like this with any of his students?x1Heavy, LoSt_AgAiN, D.Tibbitt and 2 others Thank this. -
Tell the DM you're going to be in Florida a certain date and where does he want the truck parked while you're gone.
I doubt they'll give you any problems, but just tell them how it's going to be.
You live in Texas; there's dozens of companies that will hire you if you have a problem with Swift.
Which town do you live near in Texas?FloridaRaisedTexasMade956 and x1Heavy Thank this.
