I am new to this site and am grateful that I found it . Below is an e-mail I sent to Stevens Transport, Their responce was thanks but no thanks. Any input any one can give me, I would really appreciate. I am just trying to make a good life for myself after making some mistakes. Thanks Brent
I am a 46 year old male who has made my career in construction. Due to changing economic conditions I must change my vocation. I am considering enrolling in the Sage Truck Driving school in South Carolina. Before I invest in the training I have a few qustions. From what I have learned Stevens Transport could be a good option for employment. I am concerned whether or not I would meet your qualifications. Here are my concerns.
I was convicted in 2002 of second degree burglary and served my time.
Speeding ticket 8/2008,
Speeding ticket 5/2007,
Reckless Driving 5/3/2007 (due to Speeding)
Not at fault accident 3/24/2007 (T- Boned at an intersection as I was going threw a green light)
Please let me know if after completing the truck driver training you would consider me for employment.
Thank You Brent

Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

It mostly depends on how much over were the speeding tickets? I don't think you stand a very good chance to learn and move up because your record is going to hold you down.
Just put yourself in their shoes. Are you going to hire a driver that has 3 tickets close together or a driver that is clean and has no tickets at all.Brent Thanks this. -
I would think any good school would tell you, that at this point your not really hireable. I would discuss this with a counsler at the school. That reckless is going knock you out of the running with a bunch of training companies. I would go to Werner, Drivers Solutions, KLLM.....they are companies that have a schools, they will put you through thieir school, if you pass the requiments your hired.....so they will not even offer to train you, unless they can put you to work. If no bites, I would put plans on hold for a few years.
PS. That class A with no seat time has no value in about 4 months after you graduate, it makes no sence to even attend school, until you can secure a job.Last edited: Sep 11, 2009
Brent Thanks this. -
I woud have to agree with you. Driving for a living is something I have always wanted to do . I am going to go threw with the schooling and hope for the best. At least I will have the benefit of that behind me.

The 3 tickets are fairly recent and are not good at all for your chances for employment.
2) the accident is irrelevant unless there were fatalities or serious injuries?
3) i need to know about the burglary. Details. -
would I consider you for employment to drive a truck and be responsible for valuable freight? with speeding tickets, reckless driving and burglary convictions? NO. not when there are dozens (or hundreds) of drivers (experienced and otherwise) applying who have a clean record. I hope you haven't yet plunked down money to go "threw" driving school. your best bet, if you're looking for work, is to get a job at a pancake house, swimwear shop, or pawnshop. and you'll probably make a lot more money than driving a truck. most trucking companies are simply NOT hiring right now. the few that are, are not going to give preference to an ex con with a poor driving record.
kickin chicken and Brent Thank this. -
Hello Brent
IMHO
I would not waste a dime on CDL schooling.
Your record speaks for itself, you are a repeat offender as far as speeding tickets and careless reckless endangerment. In addition, your felony must be at least 10 years old.
Burglary is one of the worst charges that a trucking company would want to see.
Unless you get a company to train you, you will only get a CDL (only) from the school you attend and probably NO job placement.
Hiring requirements are mandated by the insurance company that insures a motor carrier. They can like you all day long, but if your record won't pass the insurance approval, then they won't be able to hire you.
If a school would take your money or accept the WIA funding for your training then they should be shamed for leading you on and ripping you off.
If you are able to qualify for training with the WIA Program, then use the available funding to train in a field that you would be able to get employed.Last edited: Sep 12, 2009

Thanks for the good advice and for taking the time to give it, Brent

Dude, do yourself a favor and don't get committed to paying for school until you find an employer willing to hire you. A felony conviction isn't a small matter in this industry. You severely limit your job prospects by having one and you aren't doing yourself any good by going to school, which will end and trigger the repayment of the loan, and just hoping you can find a job.
Imagine your background with a much worse credit record than you currently have or a recent bankruptcy. Don't depend on the school to decide if you should sign up for school. Some schools won't take students they don't think will get jobs and some schools tell every potential student they are perfect for the industry.Brent Thanks this. -
If you feel the need to change vocation with that record you might want to start looking into McDonalds instead of truck driving. For 1 these insurance companies wouldn't allow them to hire you because your a terrible driver, and for 2 what co would want to hire you, your a thief.Brent Thanks this.
