I have 2 months driving solo, I drive an 18 wheeler in NYC, Newark and all over New Jersey. With the hiring practices regarding experience ur guy that rolled a truck is a better candidate than me! Just my luck.

Maybe... but we are a company that considers attitude and work ethic before years of experience. I've tested some guys with 25+ years experience that can't shift better than a driver right out of school.

Maybe, but the problem with the " - years experience "is companies will never meet prospective reliable, hard working new drivers like myself because I don't meet the criteria they have printed in there ads. I definitely understand nobody wants incompetent people driving these big trucks but in reality, any adult who has driven different vehicles their whole life can get used to a rig rather quickly. Other skilled labor occupations will physically take years to perfect. Mechanics, plumbers, contractors, etc. do not do the same action for 8 hrs plus a day. Driving a rig I am doing the same exact operation over and over every hour and every day. The only difference is the streets I'm on and the obstacles I have to be aware of. So personally I think the "experienced" only thing is ridiculous and narrow minded

@Zeviander If an applicant has a good driving record, clean MVR, clean and decent work history, no criminal record, comes up clean on drug and alcohol tests, passes the D.O.T. physical, can or would that same applicant be denied a job if they do not or are not able to list any references at all?

God bless every American and their families! God bless the U.S.A.!

If you have explainable gaps in employment I don't think that will prevent you from being hired, at least if my son is any example. He was medically disabled for 10 years (long story), got his CDL this past January. The first job he took did not work out, but he has been with a new company since May and that seems to be going well. In fact they have just offered him a regional hub position that sounds to me like it's a transition job to linehaul, which is what he thinks he wants to move into (I believe he told me the manager said he could run extraboard on the weekend if he wants). So if you have an explainable valid reason why you were not working, don't be concerned, just go for it.

This is easy to understand if give a bit of thought. The FMCSA demands up to a full 10 year history for ALL time holding a CDL. If you don't hold a CDL the FMCSA does not care. Gaps in your CDL driving history is not a positive or a negative. All you have to do is account for that time and the company MAY (are not required) to check on these gaps. I had a large gap a number of years ago because I was caring for my mother. When I started back to work after her death all I was asked was why the gap. Nothing was checked and the company just added for the gap caring for parent. That's it. Please don't make this harder then it is. You are NOT required per the FMCSA to present proof.

Thanks but I actually don't have any gaps in my employment. The only problem I have is trying to get another job with 2 months experience here in NJ. I'm working with a local company right now but I'm looking to be with a company closer to home and every single ad I check has a 1 year experience and up to hire. I posted the question because there seems to be one road block or another and these companies all seem to think the same! I've worked in car dealerships my whole adult career and I've never been so scrutinized, and now to make much less money! It seems crazy to me
