In order to have the GREAT HONOR of being a truck driver, sleeping in a parking lot in a tin can smaller than guys on death row sleep in, being away from home, having no social life, no asking a girl out on Friday night, you MUST first work at McDonalds or SOMEWHERE FULL TIME for 10 years - not even have a gap of ONE WEEK in 10 years - THEN and only THEN can you reach this great honor of being a truck driver. BUT - be unemployed for 10 years - go to school and get your RN you can go work anywhere making 70k a year for working 3 days a week, do the same and be a mechanic, you'll get a job no problem if you haven't worked for 10 years - factory jobs are hard to find but the same goes for them. Truck driving stinks and is for the losers of the world - go do something else, ANYTHING else. You'll be glad you did.

Just for the record, you will find NO language in 391.23 that states a carrier can't hire a driver with NO employment history. EVEN in the last 3 years. It is not there. 391.23 only states the carrier must investigate or make a good faith effort to investigate the history given. Carriers love to use 391.23 to be lazy when it comes to gaps. All a carrier has to do is account for that gap. Did driver take 2 years out to go to school? Note it. Did driver take 6 months out to care (as I did) for their sick mother? Note it! As @CK73 stated, what if I took 3 months and toured the south of France? Note it! That is all 391.23 requires. Yet these carriers are so dang scared of being busted by the FMCSA over those driver files they will refuse to hire a driver with gaps. That is, in my opinion, the epitome of stupid!

LilRedRidingHood, 25(2)+2 and CK73 Thank this.

We certainly had access to say 48 Class A's if so inclined. It was not a problem but round the block, a spot of multiple choice (By now the answers are beginning to etch into stone, 66 questions I think...) a picture and done. Pile the Class A's handy. When the Law stands on your fuel tank hand him a good one. Just don't ever get caught driving suspended in a particular state if that is the case. (I had a trainer who was actually revoked in Virginia but I did all Virginia driving while he played passenger on the logs.) no problem he had a valid Maryland to go with it among others.

The CDL changed much afterwards. And yes the Federal Register once printed and updated sets in stone many things. Among other books of our blessed Country. Your name could even go into the FR should you take certain actions like renouncing your Citizenship for example.

He's being facetious. Losers aren't tough enough to be truckers. One has to have a little toughness and self-discipline and self-confidence to be successful in trucking. If a driver doesn't have those, then the driver will be one of those whiners that complains constantly, making everyone else hate to be around them, including their own family.
