Whatever happened at Uber was not reported to DOT. Think of Uber as sort of a 'yellow pages' phone book for limo service on the fly. As far as the app is concerned, now that everyone carries a smartphone which have Google/Apple maps (which act as a GPS locator), the old system of calling a taxi dispatch (and praying that they would show up) is effectively dead.

how come you didnt like driving for uber?

Actually, I do like it when there's work. The challenge is it's only good around bar closings. I've got a 4.7 rating, which considering I'm pretty much driving drunks home is pretty good I think. I'll get 8 out of 10 Five stars, and my rating for the week might be 4.5. That means someone gave me a 1 and a 4 or a 2 and a 3. It's usually not to hard to figure who didn't like me. I've had some perfect weeks in there too. I think 13 for 13 is my best week in terms of perfection. I guess I'm unproven 14 and above.
Overall I like the people. I'm even ok with the drunks if they're not the belligerent type. At least if they're dinks they're not in the car too long. The flip side is some really cool people aren't in the car too long either.
What I don't like about it is that during the day, ya can be in service all day and not get any calls. Or ya might get 1 call for $5 or 10. Ya can't really do anything because if that phone goes off ya have just a few minutes to get there. So it's like ya've gotta be on your toes ready to take a run that in the daytime often doesn't happen. That's why bar closings are good. Ya know you'll get 2-3 runs in an hour or so.
Some of that is where ya live. I know of others who are doing ok. I live in the town most people visit though. So I tend to get the shorter runs. People who live out a ways can get a run to here and they'll do ok. On a per mile basis it's great. In my car I'm averaging over $1.00/mile. There's just not enough miles.
On a per hour basis I'm doing pretty good. Again though, there's not really enough good hours. I see Uber as more a decent extra $$ type job than a sustaining job. Back in January they used to guarantee we'd make $150 if we worked 6 hours on Friday + another $150 for 6 hours on Saturday. Then it became $120, then $80, and now there is none.
I think there's 3 reasons why. 1) is summer came. People will walk a mile or two when they used to take a taxi. Back in winter people would tell me that they'd walk home if it was nicer out. 2) Uber hired a ton of drivers. They're hiring all the time. So there's more drivers on the road. 3) Lyft came to town. Lyft is similar to Uber in that they use smart phones to connect drivers and people needing a ride.
Then there's a factor that has nothing to do with Uber. I'm not crazy about where I live. The town is nice enough. My neighbors are great. I don't care for the dwelling I live in though. It's on the 2nd floor. Real thin walls. Hardwood floors (I like carpeting), and the birds nuke my car every SINGLE- DANG- DAY!!! Uggh. I wash my car 4-5 times a week. It's like it's never ending. Assigned parking, but even if I park on the street I get the same problems. Working for Uber I take a wet rag out there when I get a call. Ya never know if a bird left me a present right at eye level of where the passenger would be seeing.
So I have nothing against Uber. Except for this little snafu they've been fine. Even then it got fixed (my next post, I came to post it but saw your Q) I'm going to stay there until I'm done with truck driving school. I've delivered freight before. It was in my cargo van though. I've always enjoyed driving from Michigan to St Louis or just wherever. What I didn't like was the sitting and it being tough to eat right. I hope I never have another McDonalds again. Cargo vans aren't really made to live in.
So this time around if I can get a decent truck, with a decent sleeper, and figure out a way to be able to carry a motorcycle so I'm not stuck to the truck, I could see getting rid of my apartment and just living on the road.

I wanted to thank the people who responded. It got resolved with more than a little help from this site. I'm impressed. There's a ton of information on here and some good suggestions too. Again thanks a ton.
Here's the letter I wrote. Ya can see TR influences all over it. Thanks again.
Aimee-
It won't suffice. Why is this so difficult? What would suffice is to
give me the information I originally asked for.
Uber is legal, correct? This is something common among companies that are
legal. Freight companies do this all the time. I don't get why this has
to be like pulling teeth. I've been told to talk to your legal counsel. I
don't want to have to go through that when this should be so simple.
I don't get what I've done that you've got to go and make this such a
frustrating ordeal.
The following is from a recruiter- It's not me writing to you. It's him
to me.
You should be given a packet with a bunch of application questions and
stuff to fill out. Make sure you fill it out as soon as you can. You will need
it completed on day one. It will be used for your background interview.
The packet will be a repeat of most of the information you provided to the
recruiter. DO NOT LIE OR TRY TO HIDE ANYTHING! All trucking companies must
investigate every applicants work, driving, and criminal history. EX: If you
have a misdemeanor for peeing in public, tell them.
Back to me- I can't report I contracted with Uber and then not give
contact information. I can't withhold that I contracted with Uber. They're not
the FBI or anything. They're simply companies that will want to know if
I'm telling the truth or not.
Thanks,
DannyLux Prometheus Thanks this. -
IDK about a regular motorcycle fitting, but perhaps a motorized bicycle would work. Much lighter, smaller etc. Actually I'm not sure where you would put it.
