Employment History

When the steel mill I worked at for 32 years closed down, I decided to take 2 years off. All I did for 2 years was babysit my grandsons, did lots of fishing and dabbled in the stock market. I was getting bored, so I decided to get my CDL. When I was interviewing for the job I have now, the H/R person ask me about the 2 year employment lapse I had on my resume, I told her about taking off 2 years, she laughed, nodded her head and hired me.

 

I think it is a government requirement that was implemented back in the day when truck drivers would get multiple driver's license's in different states and this was devised as some sort of way of verifying where they had been and what they had been doing, they might of got drunk and run their truck into somebody in say Georgia with their Georgia license, and now they want to get a license in say Missouri to cover up the fact of their drunk accident in Georgia. I think this was put into place back before computers and the way everything is computerized now it really isn't necessary seems like it would show up on a criminal records check nowadays, but like I said I think this was first put into place before computers and everything back in the 70's when truck drivers could easily get multiple driver's licenses in many different states.

 

There's no reason whatsoever that you should have to work for one of the bottom feeders! Don't believe all the hype and surely don't listen to the mega-carrier recruiters! There are thousands of companies out there that would take you! You just need to do your homework. The really good smaller companies don't spend millions of dollars on advertising so they are harder to find. Also they don't have the turnover rate because their drivers are happier driving for them.

Take your time, find a good smaller company to drive for. Your chances are success will be substantially higher and you will be much happier working for a smaller carrier. The difference will be night and day and the pay will be quite a bit more.
