And by the time he can cross state lines he'll have a few years experience and will be lightyears ahead of some of the 2nd and 3rd career drivers just coming out of a license mill.

One note of caution with respect to operating intrastate at age 18. You are subject to the federal regulations (and therefore required to be 21 years old) anytime that you are engaged in interstate commerce. You are deemed to be engaged in interstate commerce if the load that you are transporting is an interstate load, even if you never physically leave California. For example, another driver moves a loaded trailer from Portland, Or. to Redding, California. You then pick up that trailer in Redding and transport it to Los Angeles. You have engaged in interstate commerce and are in violation even though you never left California.
The motor carrier for whom you work should be aware of this requirement and should not assign you to a load as described above. Still, at this very early stage of your career you would do well to be certain that you understand the rules and keep your personal record free of a CDL violation.YOUNGSTER Thanks this. -
your absolutely correct, he can only handle loads that orginate and terminate in California.

What I forgot (god knows why) and others did also, is that state policy and law can supercede federal. This must be one of those cases.
If it's ok with CA then go for it.
This must be one of the reasons why I try to stay away from CA! At 18,19,20, these children have just barely learned how to drive a car much less a truck!
My youngest is 16 and doesn't have his learners for his "F" as he doesn't want to do what I've taught him! Him getting his full license is not if he can pass the state test but MY test! Mine is a "tad" bit more complicated that the state because I'm not PC!
Look at the truck, P/U and 2 bus wreck we had day before yesterday here in Missouri. The first vehicle in the wreck was a 19 yo in the P/U. Not to long ago he had to get his "F" and take the written test the ONLY time he would have had to take it unless he moved to a new state and they required a written to transfer the license. All those rules and regulations should have been fresh in his head but following to closely caused him to hit the bobtail in front of him when they approached the traffic slowdown for a construction zone. Then the 2 school busses hit him and the child is dead! 3 cases of 'following to closely" and 2 children are dead!
Granted even if the 19 yo had stopped and not hit the rear of the Volvo bobtail the first bus would have hit him because...following to closely and bus 2 hit him driving bus 1 on up onto the P/U killing the 19yo and a 12 yo girl in bus1.
No, children have no reason driving a tractor trailer no matter what mom, dad or the state thinks! It's the same thing as putting someone straight out of a training truck as a trainer! YES, it IS the same thing. Neither have the experience for what they are about to do.We have enough destruction on the roads now, why add to it with a youngster in a truck?
And most of you here in TTR knows I can be a hard arse and in this case I stand where I do. I know and someone will throw this in: we let our children join the military and go to war and yes they can drive 2 ton, 5 ton, combination vehicles, and machines made to kill but the difference is they're not driving in the same enviroment as we do. Even when spring comes around and you see convoys they are not in our world but a military one at a lower speed and controled in a military manner! large difference.
But as I said if CA sees fit to allow a child behind the wheel of a truck trailer then if I ever get released by the doctors to get back into a truck, CA will NEVER see me there! Been to CA and seen enough stupidity on their roads! Don't need another T-Shirt! Now I sound like one of those "I don't do NYC" crybabies! OH geeze Louise there is no hope for me! Just pull the freaking trigger! ROFL! -

I understand where you are coming from sir. My dad who has been a truck driver for 29 years has taught me how to drive a regular class c vehicle, and is teaching me how to drive a tractor trailer. You are entitled to your opinion, and i respect that. But in this case just because i am young, that doesn't automatically make me a bad driver. I need to get my expericnce some time why not start now? Would you rather me be on welfare and working the system like lots of younger people these days? -
This is true. There are actually some "youngsters" that listen and learn!
Some you couldn't get to learn to count from 1 to 10!
Oh don't get me started on that welfare question! Especially from where you live! It's bad enough I'M on disability due to stupid medical problems!
Just keep your head straight. Remember what you're taught. Keep learning.
Just don't take any of those "here hold my beer and watch this" chances while driving and you'll do ok I hope! -
Thank you rollover for your advice. I am hear to learn and apply that to being a safe driver. I dislike california very much, i work two part time jobs right now to get by and it sucks. I am very conservative and in the wrong state lol.
