Hello I have a question. I have a class a CDL and I'm restricted to only driving automatics. If I want to get this restriction removed can I take a test in a standard dump truck or do I need to take it in a truck and trailer? Thank you.

I believe you have to do it with at least a pup trailer.Texas_hwy_287 Thanks this.

If you can't adding a 10001 lb trailer will make it class a

Just adding a trailer may not be ideal. If it's a pintle hook trailer without a 5th wheel, he'll have a 5th wheel restriction.
For unrestricted CDL he would need.
1. gcvwr of 26,001 lbs or more.
2. 5th wheel trailer of 10,001 lbs or more.
3. Manual transmission.
4. Air brakes.MadScientist, Texas_hwy_287, anthony19877 and 1 other person Thank this. -
I don't understand that one, if you can back up a bumper/pintle hitch you can back up a fifth wheel.ZVar Thanks this.

It's a law, it's not supposed to make sense.
And it's even worse. If you test in a vehicle with a gooseneck it's the same restriction.MadScientist, Lepton1 and FlaSwampRat Thank this. -
I have already explained to you that you need a trailer attached to your dump truck, preferably one over 10000 pounds and with airbrakes.
Your original thread. (title change enforcement to endorsement or in this case restriction against manual transmission for CDLA.
Dump trucks are generally class B, but when you add a airbrake trailer of sufficient weight and capacity, you become a restricted class A. due to it being a combination vehicle now.

Like so many other things in this industry, there are no real one size fits all solutions. In this case, you will need to take the entire driving test over. However, an examiner might just let you by with some driving once you show them you can operate the dang thing stop the test. You should do this IN THE VEHICLE THE EXAMINER ACCEPTS! An examiner in Indiana might say get a tractor-trailer and an examiner in Texas may accept something else. Moral of the story? Go ask!
