Wondering what the chances are that 1999 still has a manual.

I've only seen it in one truck and that's because it was brand new.

So the fan came on once yesterday by itself. And never again, think I got a ground issue. Sitting on the side of the road now trying to prime truck to get to truckstop.

What was the engine temperature when the fan engaged by itself?

How many times did the engine reach a high enough temperature to engage the fan.

The ECM is programmed to turn the fan on at a certain setpoint and off at another setpoint. If the engine is not operated inside those parameters the ECM will not engage the fan. That is considered normal operation.

Outside of the summer months I can drive all day without the fan engaging on my Cummins ISX. My ECM is set to turn on the fan at 207°F and off at 191°F. My normal running temp is 184°F. I can accelerate to my normal highway speed easily without the engine reaching the 207°F setpoint to engage the fan.
