I have found that with a good manual and basic hand tool there is very little a person has to pay to have fixed. As for the rebuild, about the only thing beyond basic hand tools you need is a sleeve puller, 3/4 torque wrench, and a couple of extra deep sockets. Cleaning the bucket bores is a bit of a ##### but you can do it with emery cloth and elbow grease. Don't forget to pull the piston oilers before you pull the pistons. :)

I confirm on that, they kept claiming something is wrong with my transmission at two separate locations. Half a million miles later it runs fine. Their BS testing equipment and totally un stuff made me drop the oil for no reason and waste lot of time on the phone with Roadranger technician (he was thinking I'm an idiot). You are going for those SPEEDCO/Petro etc. tests only in emergency, when you need to know something immediately, thats all whats it worth

The full in-frame on my 3406E was $11,300 using all CAT engine parts and gaskets... no turbo or injectors. Parts and labor.

That's great in theory but it involves a whole lot more cost to remove and replace that engine... I doubt it would ever pay to do that.
