Engine overspeed code?

    # ID FM CNT
    2 85 01 91


    Im not sure what numbers im supposed to search for in the manual, because the manual has 4 lines wide and 2 of these numbers are just frequency and the number of codes. (i think) 85 comes up with engine overspeed. Did I search this right? What does that mean. Is this bad? It came up while idleing at 750 rpm. I also have code 1 95 0 58 active and have seen that one a lot. i need to get this truck into service, to get these fixed, but in the mean time can i idle the truck without damage? Its 95 degrees out here.

    I can't really help you, I have no idea what truck or engine you have. 85 is an engine over speed code for Detroit engines, but FMI 01 does not make sense, FMI 01 means data is valid, but below normal operating range. All I can tell you on your second code is that FMI 0 is data valid, but above normal operating range.

    Tell me what kind of truck and engine and I may be able to help.

    yeah,...just be careful of surging going down the road. The second code is a fuel restriction code,...its telling you your filter(s) are clogged. Perhaps bad wiring harness as well, or bad filter, or bad sensor.

    I am not nearly savvy on detroits, but I did take the time to collect a bit of info on them when considering what truck to buy a while back. One problem I see is that the codes are not consistent from one model to the next, nor within the same model in different applications. can be confusing finding the right codes on them.

    95/0 is part of the maint alert system, it's shows when the fuel pressure differential pressure falls below the calibrated limit. Basically it's saying that the fuel filter has a high restriction. If a new filter doesn't fix it, then you'll have to get it checked out.

    85/1 is still confusing me, a typical engine over speed is 85/0. I don't even show a listing for 85/1. I'd have to suspect an wiring issue. Possible bad bad SRS sensor, but they usually set a code for too many missed signals

    You FM # is the FMI (failure mode identifier). They are an SAE standard for all codes as follows:

    00 Data valid but above normal operational range
    01 Data valid but below normal operational range
    02 Data erratic, intermittent, or incorrect.
    03 Voltage above normal, or shorted high.
    04 Voltage below normal, or shorted low.
    05 Current below normal, or open circuit.
    06 Current above normal, or grounded circuit.
    07 Mechanical system not responding properly.
    08 Abnormal frequency, pulse width, or period.
    09 Abnormal update rate.
    10 Abnormal rate of change.
    11 Failure mode not identifiable.
    12 Bad intelligent device or component.
    13 Out of Calibration.
    14 Special Instructions.
    15 Reserved for future assignment by SAE.
