Don't tell a recruiter anything. Never volunteer information either.
Many drivers are fired during orientation because they're tricked into admitting they've used pot or other drugs.
Enjoying these threads.

Most of the large carriers check hair for past drug use. As others have mentioned, it can be detected a year or more later. Shave all the hair off you body and it will have grown back by the time you start driving. Problem solved. I've had my hair checked twice at 2 different jobs. My head has very short hair so they took samples from my arms. Weed is legal in a lot of states, but not for truck drivers.

Don’t do it! Tucking is a grueling job, it’s not fun and is over regulated. And on top of that you want to bring a wife and kid with you? Forget it.
If you have the means just to go on a snowboarding trip half way across the country on a whim, you are probably well off and don’t need the money.
Stay in OB, hang out at the beach and eat browniesBigBob410, cybill234, hagarcobra and 2 others Thank this. -
I've had edibles twice in my life. I was the guy who was the outlier. Rarely drink and never, ever did drugs. Any drugs. Well coffee, and I shotgun that #### everyday.
I'm not rich, but I've done ok. I was thinking about this... Get my CDL and then buy my own truck. Go the O/O route while paying my own bills. Couldn't I then avoid some of the family restrictions, etc? My wife and son love the idea. They're as stoked on the thought of this idea as I am. Of course it's just the fantasy right now. But we've traveled and dealt with a lot of the things I read on here (well except DOT, weigh stations, and the like)
Meh, I'm trying to talk myself into. I'm not a quitter, and I know a lot of you have so much experience that I can rely on to give me a variety of opinions. I figure I play with idea, learn all I can, and in 6 months look at what I think. See if the passion is still there and then look at moving forward. I am interested in going to CDL school at some point. I was one who always liked school and have always prioritized learning.
Sorry about all the questions and thoughts. -
Double agents and attitude-heavy guys that aren’t too happy about their lives or new truckers in general, have already reported your IP address 10 times in the last hour.
Sorry guy.Bob Dobalina and hagarcobra Thank this. -

Here is the thing, You will find that you are considered dirty for as long a year since the last pot dose. It is retained in your hair the longest, in your fat for a long time and so on. You cannot ever even have a hot drug result for pot or any other banned medicines. (As of Jan 1 this year schedule two and three pain killers (Some I take) among other medicines are also banned and will generate a hot result for a period of time in urine, blood and most especially hair.
States rights does not apply here. Trucking is federally regulated, under federal rules and so on. Especially since it is considered a public safety position when you are rolling 40 ton.
Consider the following concept. Medical pot. If you are sick enough to require a prescription for that in my state, you are already too sick to pass the DOT medical requirements to run a big truck or hold a CDL under tier one. (Interstate commerce and intrastate commerce)
Wait 18 months before attempting anything in the trucking industry. And do not whatever you do pick up that stuff again for that period if ever once you get into schooling and get the CDL etc. Because this industry will absolutely ensure you will not be drugged and driving a semi or big truck again. You will be out. Those kinds of records percolate through your data as well.
Also.
You have a state where you live as does all other states. in each state is a pharmacy board that monitors literally every pill of anything dispensed in real time within a period of time. Theoratically a pot dispensary could be entering your purchasing of pot in a legal state into a data base that persists for up to 10 to 20 years or even life. (In my case I go back 20 years plus on every pill of anything I have ever been prescribed.)
There is a bigger database kept above that one kept by the state. People who abuse, divert, sell or otherwise caught with unprescribed pills, drugs etc on their persons or show a history of same via the doctor, police, courts etc are entered into a special national database. If your name is ever on there in extreme cases you would be arrested should you show up at the ER claiming to be in ow looking for medicine. They will find other ways besides narcotics to take care of that broken arm.
The industry has changed in my life time. You claim to be able to run great distances in 21 hours. That's awesome. But remember, you are allowed 11 hours to drive in our HOS laws and then you must stop and stay where you are at the end of that 11. Sometimes you might take a 34 hours wherever you are at in order to get your full 70 hour work week restarted.
You will find that the industry in CDL is exempt from overtime of any kind. With the exception of those under 10,000 pounds and those engaged in EMT, fire etc. There are beginning to be a wave of lawsuits rolling coast to coast to collect unpaid overtime for these people only. Not truckers.
You appear to be living well with your wife in a beautiful place. I suggest you stay there in paradise even if you did get bored once in a while. Trucking is not work. It is a way of life. And not everyone gets to succeed or will.
If you would examine the DEA's banned drug list related to CDL, you will find that even the active drug found in Tynenol PM which is active for up to 20 hours and has convicted people who are otherwise stone sober for DUI in cars because they failed the roadside eye test which is a valid medical test given to prove if you have something in your system. I think there are 6 clues given by your eyes only in very specific limits that when displayed means you are altered, drugged or drunk. There is no way around that.
There is another complication.
There is no definitive test to show a presence of Pot in your system itself roadside, they will take you and draw blood out of you and test that. Your constitutional amendments for personal effects, papers, dna and so on etc does not apply here. They will take that blood. Quickly.
Further.
Just living in a state that has legal pot will cause you to be viewed as a potential liability by trucking companys in some cases. They probably wont even touch you in favor of 50 people coming from states wanting a job without any legal pot. It's just the way it will be. Getting hired after a CDL test is done and you have it in hand is the hardest for anyone.
Ive said enough. Im not your opponet. But you do live in what I would consider to be a paradise and I would think that you need to stay within that life.
There is another complication. Half Life of Pot. Let's say you did smoke one this morning. If you did... and got into your personal vehicle, you are committing DUI. And stand to be arrested for it.
How Long Can Marijuana Be Detected? Some THC metabolites have an elimination half-life of 20 hours. However, some are stored in body fat and have an elimination half-life of 10 to 13 days. It takes five to six half-lives for a substance to be almost entirely eliminated.
So every time you touch something that affects ANY driving your freedom is at risk via a simple eye test.
