No better way to make $150,000 a year then trucking. Just sit in that seat all day not have to do anything but take gobs and gobs of wompom to the bank.

Anything you enjoy about driving will disappear after you start driving professionally. Do some research on here and learn about the b.s. I'm very impressed that you waited til pot was legal to become a druggie. That sort of self control is always a plus.

Thanks. that is the type of info I was looking for.

All things aside. I had edibles twice in January of this year. Some of you are making me feel like a chronic (pun?) user. ####...the amount of #### I've given potheads over the years is all coming back to F-with me. LOL

I've always researched anything I'm going to do to the nth degree. I love driving. I love trucks including working on them. I came here to see the other side of my pie eyed wonder. Ya, I've heard all the stories on the news about meth'd up drivers and driving tired etc. I even expected the office politics / a-hole workers / Leo's etc. I was assuming when I told people where I live and what I do to get blanket statements of "are you insane, stay where you're at." Here's the thing every industry is more or less the same. A basic #### show. The beauty is in how you navigate it. The reward is doing something you really enjoy. I don't really enjoy what I'm doing. My thought was to begin at 52 to look for a new career. Something that would motivate me. I've been doing this for so long you hear someone say something and you can remember that same sentiment come up in a slightly different context each and every decade.

If you guys don't mind, I'll keep reading and learning and see where my mind ends up. Thanks

The only people that rag on someone for marijuana are ppl with stix up their arses. Do what you want it’s your life.

Never take the words of someone quick to pass judgment on someone else seriously, for they are more than likely only trying to make themselves feel better.

Disappearing desire to drive was the one thing that concerned me above all else. I get pretty zen driving. My thought was the difference between "wanting" to get somewhere and "having" to get somewhere would suck the fun out of it.

I've been devouring the threads here. Is it an accurate assessment that a portion of the BS that many drivers talk about is self inflicted? I mean a certain amount of #### happens. I've almost always noticed that a smile and kind word goes incredibly far. Most people are having a #### day, and not adding to their #### is a welcomed respite. I watch people in my industry implode due to an overabundance of pride, laziness, inefficiency, and general feeling that the world owes them something. Is that fair? Avoiding those traps (as well as anyone can) might help? I'll say a lot of you drivers don't paint a rosy picture. hahaha

You are a smart person and have a great attitude. You'd be a fine driver. We need more people like you out there. You'll find many naysayers with bad attitudes out there, but it's like anywhere else; some people just love to complain.

I've never had a hair follicle test in 15 years, and I'm not sure how common they actually are across the industry percentage-wise. If you opted-out of starting with a company for that reason, nothing would go on your "permanent record." You're only penalized if you refuse a test when you already work there.

For me, the adventure part wore off quickly and it became a job, so I soon moved to daycab, home-daily work. Despite the lack of adventure/"freedom" and the stresses inherent in trucking, I still love my job. I believe it is my positive attitude that makes all the difference.

Go for it. You can always go back to doing what you know.

Jump in man. You seem burnt out. I was too after 7-8 years of doing a regular job. I took what little money I had and jumped in. I’ve made a good career out of trucking for myself. Yes there will be ups and downs but it’s still a good career. I never been anywhere in my life until I did trucking. Was a great 5 years long haul I did and don’t regret it. Im now been local for the past 7 years and still glad I’m in trucking. I might venture back OTR in 10 years+ from now but I’m happy with where I’m at and also the money I make being home.

You seem to have a passion for it. Sometimes the career picks the person. That’s how I think I ended up trucking. I’m a 2nd gen trucker. My dad didn’t want me to drive and never taught me none of it. But I loved going with him as a kid. He wanted me to mess with computers which was a smart idea. But it didn’t interest me. When I got older I didn’t even think about being a truck driver. I went into the military just like my dad. He passed away when I went to the Marines. Then I started out working a regular job. With no trucking on my mind. Got burnt out. Then I started noticing how nice of a rig ASHLEY furniture had when they would deliver furniture to us. One of my coworkers was older 50’s had a paid off house with his wife so I knew he was money savvy. He said his relatives seemed to have a lot of things and were truckers ( around 05 when truckers were making a lot of money at good wages before the economy collapsed) and said they made great money. So after that I was hooked and wanted to go long haul. Driving a truck came naturally for me. Even one of my instructors said it seemed like I’ve done it before in which I never did. I pretty much followed in my fathers footsteps without even trying to. Pretty crazy.

My vote I think you should do it.

    You want some real advice.

    FIND something else to do.

Just because you drove a car or truck or van or microbus across the country, it isn't like driving a truck. This job is dangerous, it is thankless and it can be boring. YOU don't always see the best of what the country has to offer and most of the time you are stuck in a piss drenched parking lot where the surface is 100 and the smell is horrible.

If you want adventure, go to Escapees forum and see what people are doing to make a living while traveling.

BUT don't get into this mess.

Oh and by the way, you will spend anywhere from $1200 to $8000 for a license, and if you have drugs in your system, you will piss that all away. They don't mess around with drugs in this industry and I think it may become a bit more strict in the future.

Is that what you say to the people who want to drive your trucks? Or do you already know that since they have experience they are gluttons for punishment and already know what they are getting into?!
