Moosetek...you talked about it being pretty expensive to be living out on the road. Can you give me ideas on how expensive is expensive? I'm a smoker, so I will be buying cartons of cigs in Oregon where I live and have no sales tax. I'm going to figure about $200 a month on cigs, unless I can kick this bad habit and/or at least switch to e-cigs. Also, I've started to drink more than I eat. Got myself on a diet. There are some drinks that have all the nutrients that are needed to stay healthy. That's one route I plan on doing.

American-Trucker...I see what you mean and agree with your point. About the longer I stay out, the more money I will make. I think the first year, I will mostly be pushing to get experience. The money will be nice, if I can make good money, but experience to come back to Oregon and find a local job, dedicated, regional job is what I want ASAP.

I'm a computer nerd, so I will be video chatting with my family whenever possible. I will also be doing online classes while I'm not driving and when I have the downtime. I don't want to drive for the rest of my life, but I think having my CDL and the experience will open a lot of doors with local companies.

I spend about $20/$30 a day x 5 days. If I'm not on the road, I spend more.

Missouri offers cigarettes at the lowest prices you'll find anywhere, for now. Stock up when you drive through.

We have a place here (Mississippi), I get mine for $25 a carton. The wife is doing E-cigs.

If you go the E-cig route. I suggest testing it out for at least a week. THEN go all out with a reliable company for your supplies. Start up cost can run $100 - $200. After that, it falls to about $40 a month, depending on your brand and quantity of "vaping" you do.

Your OTR cost will be the highest during your training period. You'll be limited on what supplies you can carry with you. Once you go solo, you'll have additional oppurtunities to reduce cost, by bringing food, drinks, etc from home.

Invest in a cooler and a small oven. They'll pay for themselves within the first 60 days you go solo. It's hard to turn lose of the money at first. But if you don't do it. You'll lose at least $500 a month until you do. Unless you eat noodles every day. :(

N172 one thing that wasn't mentioned. The first 6-12 weeks you won't be making anywhere 2k a month. The first 3 weeks is school and no paycheck during this time. You'll need money for food, smokes, and soda or whatever you drink. The next 3-6 weeks you'll be with a trainer making $350-$450 a week. After this you will start making money. Also if you don't go to thru company sponsered training you'll be paying for the training yourself. Be prepared to be OTR at least a year since most local companies require this as a minimuim to be considered. As far as video chatting with family and friends don't count on doing it very much. T/S internet is too slow and expensive for that. Aircards regardless of the service provider are generally limited to 5 gigs a month and too slow as well. My suggestion for video chatting is if and when you do a reset stay at a hotel/motel with Wifi at least. One more thing I spend about $40 a day for smokes, food, soda, and snacks.

especially the first year you want to be out longer than two weeks..to hit 40 grand you basically taking 3 days off a month at starter company waiges ok..that gives you an idea..

o matter what the recruiter told you about miles bank on 2000 to at most 2500 with any company first year..if you get more..awesome and give kudos for yourself for working the system well...

its the price you pay for the doors that open to you after that first year..

    John,

Do they still offer "quick" salary upgrade for going regional? I know they offered it in the past. Not sure if they do now.

Noobs that switched to regional during that time, were upgraded to .35 a mile immediately.

Not sure about that. I am from FL and no southeast regional apparently. If its out there I would like to find it though! I know one thing, this co. has miles. My trainer and I did 7k in 2 weeks- one more week of training for me. They also pay for one room a week for both of us- getting a reset in Laredo right now.
