I have been off sick and will be for the rest of the year most likely. Getting stir crazy so I start looking at EOBRs for my truck, just incase I will have to get one (hope not). I am just trying to get ahead of the curve and get prices and knowledge. I cant locate any that will work on my 1977 Pete. I dont have anything for them to plug into, everything I have found has to plug into vehicle and that just aint gona happen. Any one have any advice or thoughts or can give company info for something that will work for us drivers with the old equipment. I have eclipse logs because I like it. I don't hate electronics but I cant use it if it will not hook up to my truck. And I don't see me buying another truck for anothe 10 to 15 years so what are the options we have with old iron.

There are even DOT approved apps for smartphones now for Elogs. It all works off satellites and GPS and all of that. Since it is your truck, nobody needs to know the engine information (even though you have no computer). All they will care about is maybe what speed you going.

I can't see the Elog rule going through anyway. It does not address the problem of drivers falsifying logs in the first place. Drivers do it because they have been held up at a shipper for hours on end, got stuck in traffic, all sorts of things. Companies would start to have to pay drivers by the hour that Elog says they worked, or else drivers wouldn't even be able to earn enough in a day to afford McDonald's at the end of the day, let alone put any money aside for savings. I can't see the increase in cost being absorbed by all the shippers when drivers say "you will pay me by the hour so I can make the same as I did before you gave me this device, or I will be better off working at WalMart." What they are counting on is people who think they can't do any other kind of work, and trucking is all they know. It will reduce productivity of every truck on the road. The only drivers that should be forced onto Elogs are the ones that routinely get caught driving in gross violation of the HOS rules. The rules themselves need to be written. This whole 14 hour marathon day is very limiting. Perhaps the FMCSA should look at how we do it in Canada. 16 hour window from time of start to the end of your shift. In that time, 14 hours on duty are allowed, and 13 hours of driving are allowed. You can take a 2 hour nap or off duty time each and every day, followed by 8 hours in the sleeper for night rest. It must add up to at least 10 hours off and MUST have an 8 hour straight sleep break. The rule could be modified for 11 hours of driving time. I find it is VERY easy to stay legal within these rules.

    End of rant.

if you want to keep trucking. and it gets to where we all have to be babysat.

you may just end up having to buy another truck.

if everyone starts followig carb. you still might havce to buy another truck.

reality check. if you want to keep driving, you may have no choice.

nothing to panic over just yet but something that needs to be thought about.,

They can't make everyone scrap their trucks and buy newer. I wouldn't worry about it. They will not get mandated on everyone. Drive on.

if you want to keep driving you'll be scrapping.

unless it stays a local operation not required to use HOS.

i noticed landstar isn't taking ANY new trucks that can't run an eobr. all new o/o's are now getting one. it's a loaner and landstar pays the installation.

the eobr legislation is passed and coming july of 13 or 14, i forget. it has not yet been described yet what form the eobr is to take though. it may be a full pn quailcom sat unit type thing.or it.could be a simple sat tracker unit noot hooked to the truck. etc. wait and see what form it takes. i assume there will be exemptions for.older trucks at least for a while if its something that goes that way.

We have Qualcomm MCP200's in our new trucks that give us everything from HOS, DVIR's, to tracking and performance monitoring and navigation systems. We use them for scanning and printing too.

I have an extra one I'm putting in my '84 Pete. The only thing it won't do is monitor the vehicle performance because it has no computer to connect to. It will do HOS, DVIRs, tracking, navigation, printing, scanning and all the other non-vehicle-computer-based stuff. I just verified that with Qualcomm yesterday.

Granted, the MCP200's are pricy ($2,500 + install) but Qualcomm has lesser versions like the MCP50 for just a couple hundred. We also have a couple guys in F450's pulling 51' trailers that are using U-Drove on their iPhones. I think the point of the mandatory EOBR is for HOS so any number of inexpensive solutions are out there, regardless of vehicle year. Some say the smart phone apps are only as good as the driver doing the input (even though it's GPS movement activated if they are logged in) but for O/O's using vehicle mounted things like a Qualcomm, if they have the web control, they can make "corrections" to the logs as well. The driver, if given access, can also use the 16 hour rule or Off-duty Driving when needed.

Since I have an extra Qualcomm from a truck I sold, I'm putting it in my old Pete. Once you get used to using an EOBR, its really nice to not have to mess with doing a paper log or paper DVIR. When asked for log books by CHP, when our drivers tell them we have EOBRs, they don't even check them.

One trick that is not legal and should be never used with your EOBR's by the way is stopping before your 11 hours is up, changing the duty status to something other than driving, waiting 5 minutes and then changing it back and driving over your 11 hours. This is because the over 11 hours driving duty status can be changed later to any other status so long as there is a break point in the duty status. It's illegally done so that the next day, the prior day reflects within hours.
