It never has bothered me that my chains haven't been shiny since they were new. Best thing to do to keep them from getting so rusty that they are hard to deal with is to use them.

cnsper, HighCountry, barroll and 2 others Thank this.

Round and round the barn in the gravel.
It works pretty good as long as he doesn't "accidentally" run them through the mud hole.
But as soon as the outer coating is wore off the links they corrode about as fast as a shined up moldboard.

Few years ago I was helping the old man get some old tractors hauled to a threshing show. He's got this old late 50's step deck. The drop on the thing is only like 10" and it's got a short beavertail on the back.
We made this pair of 10' steel ramps.
So god awful heavy it takes 2 men and a small boy to drag them up on the deck.
Well we loaded a few old 2 bangers and took off. He's driving and I'm riding.
We get 5 miles down the road and all of a sudden some guy is swerving all over behind us. He gets around and a few minutes later some other guy is doing the same thing. We're both looking in the mirrors wondering what this moron want? He comes on around and is waving his arms. So we pull over and sure enough we forgot the ramps down.
It wore a good 2-3" off the bottom but they set real good against the ground now. I blame him and he blames me.

I soak mine over night in a drum and dip them in another filed with water the next day. Gets them looking like new and clean.

Look on eBay if you don't want to wait around hoping used stuff will pop up before you need it. Most of the places that you'd find otherwise already sell there. If you aren't in a hurry, playing the waiting game can yield some great result on equipment.
