My husband and I prefer the southerly route's better, though I did enjoy an early autumn trip over I-80.

Lot's of good places to stop with good food. Catfish round-up in Seminole, OK ext 200 next to a Loves, with a casino across the street is an excellent place to stop food is awesome. ( casino has truck parking also out back). Ed's ext 311 in Sallisaw, Ok is a good place to stop, but the food is sometimes hit and miss.

Route 66 casino has truck parking and their buffet at the casino is out of this world...though a bit pricey. right before Albuquerque at ext 140

<sigh> I could go on and on, we like good food and parking other than at the major truck stops. 1 of the companies he worked for was off 40 in Ok, another 2 we just traveled on 40 and 20 alot well til winter, then we were on 70 and 94 alot...

99 is a crap highway. It will definitely test your suspension!

Watch out for those CHP although I doubt they'll have time to get you with all the other trucks they have stopped. Didn't you notice all the trucks on the side of the road being inspected and ticketed? *sarcasm off*

I hate 99. 5 is smoother & has more rest areas. 99 goes through every podunk town in the Central Valley with tons of short on & off ramps at every one. Way more traffic, way more slow traffic trying to strafe your front bumper from both sides because of all all those ramps.

But.... if you are going over 58 the trip over from Buttonwillow sucks whether you take 58 or Stockdale Hwy. Kind of a coin toss IMHO.

Its a coin toss. When I am leaving Modesto and need to run 58 I take 99. If I am running to L.A. Ill take the 5. The 58 stretch from I5 to 99 is horrid too, thats what makes 99 easier.
You could leave and take the 5 south, then cut over on 41 to 99 south, then to 58 also.

No matter what, getting to run the 58 is a nice run. I also really enjoy I-40 through Arizona and New Mexico. If you have a chance to take a 10 in Flagstaff, then by all means treat yourself to a stay at the Little America truck stop. Pay the $10 for a shower, with marble, nice fixtures, and a hot tub for two (if you can find a "two")...

Why does 58 suck? Traffic? Road conditions?
