Take an air pistol to the air filter screen about once a month. This screen is just like a small version of what is in your house heater except thinner.
As the airflow slow, the fan has to work harder and use more amps to get the same results.

I've never had a truck operate with key in the ON position. Only OFF and ACC,.
And yep, ALWAYS turn the unit off a few minutes BEFORE turning key on. Unless you like to watch smoke signals from the exhaust pipe. -
this one only works in the OFF position and works very well in regards to heat. however if the temp is set above 82 it doesn't work. it'll shut down. I've experimented.
-
Previous trucks have had a webasto heater, webasto did work no matter what position the key was in, motor running or not.

If anything is blocking the air intake on the back the unit will overheat and shut itself off.
Also that's the air that's being blown all over the truck. A lot of guys throw their gloves/oil/smelly #### in the side box right by that intake and the vapors get blown all over.
Just something to be mindful of, no one wants to smell diesel fumes all night. -
I had an espar that was wired the same way needing the ignition off. It had a generic thermostat and the thing was a flame thrower, the fan had a turbo mode that would cook you out in under 3 min. When I had the apu installed they changed the thermostat/controller and it never did put out the heat like it did before.
