If it really is a small company, chances are your boss will find out you applied somewhere else when they call to verify employment.
Ethical...well, not really ethical but looking for opinions

Sounds like you have abit of a relationship with him. Honestly I would avoid burning bridges just in case the grass wasn’t greener. Wait for him to come back and when the new job guarantees you a job give the boss two weeks notice.

I’m not sleeping with the dude or anything, lol, but he’s a pretty good dude. I would be giving two weeks regardless, so I’m not really burning bridges, it just puts him in a bind. I know I’m not doing anything wrong but it’s just a sticky situation. It’s irrelevant now anyway, his vacation is farther away than I though so it’s all good.Grumppy Thanks this.

Move on, but respectfully. Just be honest. I had to do a similar thing when I got my LTL job. The boss really wanted and tried to keep me but he knew there was no way he could match the pay after he asked what the pay scale was here. I gave 2 weeks notice and he asked toward the end of it if I was still planning on leaving and I said I had to, that I'd be stupid to pass up the opportunity. You're in that exact situation. Don't pass up the opportunity.Texas_hwy_287, Mike2633, road_runner and 2 others Thank this.

Biggest regret I have from quitting my last job is giving them a heads up. It was all unintended as well. It all started with me telling my coworker that I was planning on moving back closer to my parents at the end of winter. They are old and I just needed to be back home. Long story short, word made it all the way up the chain and they had an ad out to replace me not too long after. They hired a replacement 2 months before I actually left . They cut my hours down to nothing and tried to get me to quit earlier that I planned.
Give them two weeks. That's all I plan on doing when I transition to my next job. It's standard and it's fair.Mike2633 and Bob Dobalina Thank this. -
That’s one of the things I learned many years back: truck drivers are among the biggest ninny gossips on the planet!

Over all the years and all the jobs, there’s been only a handful of coworkers that I knew I could trust not to blather what we talked about all over the place.Texas_hwy_287, Mike2633, road_runner and 1 other person Thank this. -
Well I guess I didn’t “pass” the assessment. Took it Monday evening, no calls for two days. Called back to follow up today and the TM was “in a meeting and will call me back shortly”....that was 5 hours ago.
