When making a decision to "quit", look at the big picture and your goals. I've known 0/0's that when forced to retire due to DOT physical or other reasons, were no better off than when they started driving at day 1, and in many cases worse off, facing a retirement with nothing but Social Security and a run down mobile home to live in. Others were more fortunate and kept everything in perspective at all times & have a nice home paid for plus a vacation home somewhere and a fat 401K or other retirement fund plus Social Security. You can do all the above as an 0/0 or a company driver; whichever is the safest way to reach those goals. Most everyone has a goal to have a comfortable retirement & not count pennies month to month. Take the avenue that will get you there and will not cause your loved ones to pay a heavy price due to your pride or unwise choices.

Threads like this show me that some are cut out for this business and some are just made out to be employed by this business. Just sayin.... If your one breakdown from going out of business. Guess what??!! YOUR DOING IT WRONG!!! This business does not care about your MOM your DAD your DOG or your WIFE. You either move on or you go BROKE. Period.

I don't think about driving someone else truck. I have much more flexibility running my own truck and under my authority than I ever could as a company driver. Things can get tight when the economy is down and freight is sparse. But, you plan as best as you can so that you can make it through the ups and downs of running a business. All businesses have cycles and you learn to adjust and plan for those times. It would be nice to have someone else write the check when a transmission goes out, but that is all part of owning the truck. If you plan and save your money, you are much less likely to be so stressed out when a major breakdown does occur.

i had a nice account going on. then an electrical issue popped up. 8G and numerous shops and road calls before it was finally fixed.

after 3 months and 20g later for one thing after another. the final straw was when the front cover started leaking. another 3G. then the rear main. and head gasket. might as well rebuild the engine for a few g's more. but the savings account was dry. and the bills were falling behind.
