Seems like CA gets the brunt of the hate here for many valid reasons.
It's still a nice place for other things and the perfect place to live if you're no longer involved with a big truck.
But until that happens, I too will stick where I'm at until some other means to head back out that way arises

Been living out here in eastern NM/west TX for the past, three years and I dread it.
About the only thing I seem to have in common with folks out here is a like for firearms, but that's about as far as any similarity goes. -
Yeah for me it was when my Travel agent looked at me and said how rested are you and how fast can you get to CA for us. I would be like OH CRAP who screwed the pooch and how fast do I need to move that freaking load.

I'm quite sure if you offered the Canadian customs officer a couple hundred US dollars he will WISK you right through customs.
