Ever set your parking brakes.....

    ...and your truck just kept on moving? I did once at a truckstop in East St. Louis (I forget the name, IIRC it was near a landfill, lol). I found a space in the dirt lot which happened to be covered in a layer of ice. I set the parking brakes and got out to get a hub reading. The parking space I picked was on a slight incline. I noticed my truck was slowly moving backwards but the wheels were stopped, it was skating! I jumped back in the truck, released the brakes, put it in 1st gear and engaged the power divider but no luck, I just spun the wheels. They were warm from the trip and were just melting the ice. My truck and trailer kept sliding, about a foot or so before the DOT bumper finally came to rest against the log divider keeping trucks from ending up in the ditch. I was slightly crooked but there wasn't anything I could do about it so I set the brakes and prepared for the night.

    In the morning the tires had cooled enough that they stuck to the ice and I was able to get out of there, lol.

    It can happen, I've been in that situation many times

    I run a lot in northern Canada and when it is very cold out I don't set the brakes as long as the truck is not going to roll, because they freeze up and they stick and can sometimes start a fire if you are going down the road with your brakes frozen on your trailer ( I've had this happen)

    I always carry a bag of salt and a chain with me in the winter, a chain can sometimes come in handy to use for traction

    yep, happened to me as well. at a company i used to work for, we parked our trucks on a slight incline. i got out, and started to walk around the rig, when i noticed the rig slid backwards. i got out of the way, as i really didn't want to get hurt, and the rig slid down this incline and stopped in the middle of the yard, as it hit "dry pavement". i really didn't care if it did crash into any trailer, as the company knew darn full well the conditions of the lot at the time. they wouldn't be able to fire me, or do anything else. we parked our rigs in the proper place, and shoveling snow or putting down salt "ain't my job"..............at least according to "union rules".......

    I noticed that truckstop is a pilot now and that back lot where I did the skating is sealed off.

    YUP---one very cold winter night--at a pull off in WY--stopped to cool a tire--and the truck started--LOL

    I forgot to set the brk completely.Thank god for another driver walking back to his trk.I was walking in the trk stop he seen it move and ran over and set the brk.I gave him $10.00.Believe me it would have been one costly mistake.Never forgot after that.Then I forgot to set both brks when empting hides and a whole trl full of cow hides dumped on concrete rather then the belt.Like 200 hides.You have to set both brks otherwise trk will move.

    I did in a steep landfill with an overloaded transfer trailer. Had to move to level ground to get out or the truck would have rolled away on me. Had nightmares about parking brakes not holding for years after for some reason.
