I once knew a guy that kept 2 6-packs of Pepsi in his car - per day! He was addicted to caffeine, and needed it just to function at a near normal level. In short, he was a drug addict.
It is not good to be dependent on sugar and caffeine to stay awake. Or 'energy' drinks, for that matter.
When I have gone on long drives I have used caffeine pills and aspirin. I'll take a couple aspirin to relieve aches, which lets me keep my mind more on the road. And I'll take a NoDoz every few hours to keep me a bit more alert.
But it is easy to overdo it, if you ignore the warning signs.
The most obvious sign is streaking. That is when you see streaks of light flashing across your vision. It means that you are overtired, and your eyes are jerking from side to side very quickly. It means you are losing control of voluntary muscle control.
If you ever experience this, pull it over and get some sleep. If you don't, you'll be off the road in a much worse way.
Ever take "5 hour energy"

Watering eyes, Yawning and sometimes burning eyes are all good signs of needed sleep.

If you depend on any kind of stimulant to do your job, you are not getting enough rest, period. It doesn't even matter what the job is, the sleep deficit will catch up to you in a number of ways, and when you least expect it.
GoalieDon Thanks this. -
I have a little clue about 5 hour energy,if the FDA doesn't shut it down it works.
If your tired drink a couple cups of coffee a day but nothing will compare to a bed and rest.
YES! anything in this world can be addicting it is our jobs to make sure we don't. -
No need for chemicals or fancy energy drinks. Just roll down the window and hold your arm out with a $100 bill in your hand!

I had the opportunity to use the 5 hour energy drink on my trip back from New Orleans. It did help me stay alert. The only after affects was the fact that I was wide awake for almost 30 hours(pretty much wired I guess) But it was an 8 bus move and the lead driver made it clear he wasn't going to stop for anybody.

5 Hour is way better than Red Bull. No side affects that I have noticed, as far as the Lady Doctor. You need to spend 11 hours driving at night on desert roads where you are just about the only one out there. After a certain amount of time the lack of stimulation will cause you not to be as alert as you should be. I use 5 hour on occasion not everyday.
I agree it does not replace sleep it does however work well, seems to have no real side effect. At least as yet. -
What you saw is not how everybody on food stamps uses it like that. It is short sighted to even think like that. My girlfriend was on them (wic) for a while when I was having a hard time out there. She never spent them like that neuther does most people. Yes the states and federal law needs to make it illegal to get stuff like that, but we/you also need to understand there are a lot of things that have sugar in them, so we/they need to keep that in mind. -
Those things dont work for me and other so called energy drinks make me have to pee every 20 minutes.Hell with that.
The only thing that will make you not tired is sleep, full stop. I like to snack/graze with things like baby carrots, peanuts ect.... all durring the drive, I also drink strong coffee for more than half the drive, but I stop about the last 3 hours of the day(drive time) so I can wind down. After a shower and a meal, I am dead to the world. to me that is the safest way to go. I want to make to home and not in a body bag. -
