this is only partially true......schools give the basic foundation to be a safe driver with advanced training like, "defensive driving", the "smith system", "log books","hazmat" to name only a few items. i would like for YOU to give us links to such companies..........because frankly, there just isn't..........what he would end up doing, is signing a contract to be a company driver while being trained for the 6 to 8 weeks.........there isn't any "evaluation" per say, only a road test from the employer. schools however can and DO evaluations, as this is what i have personally done. again, please link some of them here for us. i know when I SPEAK of things here, I CAN PROVIDE links to back up what i say, many times over. this along with a clean DMV record, now also, a clean CSA record.......in the near future.
Thank you Bryan, I tried to send you a private message but as a new user it will not let me yet so I will give you my e-mail address & then I can give you my phone no. from there. e-mail is marksworld1@toast.net Thank you again and I look forward to talking with you, Mark
A big part of the schools and refresher courses are what the companies insurance companies want to see. An accredited school if no experience is what they want to see.
Rerun you should know after 20 years experience that there are companies that DO NOT advertise for their drivers so asking for a link does not quantify the entire industry. So you should know that not ALL companies require a school if the driver can show experience. This is precisely why some of us have said to get out there and look.
Try May Trucking, Prime or others. There are plenty of companies that will put you with a trainer. You ae just going to have to find them and call them.
If you don't mind flatbed you can try Maverick. I know they used to except people that have been off the road without a refresher course.
first, his experience is MANY, MANY years ago, not recent..........that's a problem for him. and you are wrong,,,,,,,,almost ALL companies require a person to go back to school..............unless that company pays its own insurance, and doesn't care. the link i asked for from condo guy was to prove companies will hire him and train him for 6 to 8 weeks.........and still give him a paycheck........?? that's training he will have to pay for, you know, like sign a contract.........?????? this is why i wanted links to prove this, as i can't see ANY company hiring him for that amount of time, have a driver trainer with him........and pay him as well.........without having him sign a contract...??? this from condo guy he even said it himself, about "advertising".............
All the ones I have talked to will put me with a trainer but only after I have went through a training course, the fact that I went and passed the test on my own and got my CDL class A means nothing to them.On a positive note I may have found a job working for an owner op close to me who has a mail run,I am going through the paperwork now.Hopefully this will be a story with a happy ending.I want to thank everyone for their posts and advice & support.I will keep you all updated as to how this turns out. Thanks again & everyone be safe out there, Mark
well..........i think i "may have" mentioned something like this......didn't i........?? doing a mail run ain't so bad usually the same run each night (or day). you may have to do all the runs the o/o has, so you know where you need to go in case you cover for someone else.........that is unless of course, he only has the one (or two) runs. remember too that many o/o's pay on a 1099 tax form, and if you are unaware of what that is, it means he does not take out taxes each week, therefore you must save money each week. he WILL report his payments to you for his tax purposes though. and there probably will not be any health benefits as well....... but, if all goes good, you'll be driving again. stay there at least 6 months, then leave if you want better.......but if the guy treats you well, then stay.........you could be quite happy there............ also, one other note......that contract he has with the post office is a bid run. he has to bid on it once a year, or whatever his contract states. in order to keep the contract, he may not be able to raise his rates, and this will keep you at the same wage for a very long time..........just be prepared for that too. best of luck to you, keep us informed.......
Yes that is how it is set up & I am aware of how it works.I will be making one run a week starting Saturday morning & coming back Sunday morning.I will be making more on this weekend run than I was in my regular 40 hour a week job.If all goes well I will stay with this job for a long time.Work 2 days off 5.I have a side business I started up a little over a year ago doing electric car conversions but have not had much free time to work it,this will give it to me.I don't think this could have worked out any better if I set it up myself.I should know in the next day or two I still have to be approved by the Post Office but I do not see any problem there.Thank you for you help, will let everyone know how this works out,Mark
