Yea i figured if I am going to be a trucker I had better start practicing respect to truckers out there.
Anyways I have decided to take a survival job, get moved in march and settle down untill November when it will be 3 years of having my licence with a clean record on it...
I have a few companies in mind that will train, I have done plenty of research on CR England and yea EVERY trucking school, EVERY company I spoke with had NOTHING NICE to say about them... If Im going to start a career in trucking I refuse to get screwed by being stupid and jumping to something the first time

Werner won't hire for a lifetime. The big dogs have so many nipping at their heels they only pick those who were good enough to not get caught.
Try getting on with an O/O or give fed ex custom critical a call.
Take care out there!
If only all newbs did their homework. If only... -
hmm I wonder what schnider would say... I may just have to go with CR England for the cost of tuition of them training me so when I'm through I can get the hell out of there and on to something better.
I did hear about their idle policy of letting the truck run.. I sleep with my windows open in winter time, I've got no problem shutting the truck off.. -
Everyone is avoiding the obvious here...when you apply they are going to want a CURRENT DMV PRINTOUT FOR THE PREVIOUS 5 YEARS.
Good advice for you...be completely honest...don't try to dodge any questions with shortcut answers.
CR England has a "special victims unit"...(my term)...this guy pulls you in his office and will get to the bottom of ANY FELONY CONVICTION...so my advice...just be completely up front with all of your information...if you can get it (or have it) the court paperwork of the felony in question...at least they can't say you tried to hide it.
Good luck!

I was talking with a friend about almost this same subject
He brought up a good point
It might be hard to get hired as a driver if your felony has anything to do with stolen goodsotherhalftw Thanks this. -
I agree with that however the bigger pictures is actualy DRIVING and I would think drug use, violent crimes and sex abuse would be bigger threats to peoples safety.. Besides where am I going to put those stolen goods while driving them... -
Well, I'm glad to see there is a lot of useless advice on here. So, as someone who has a felony record, and has been driving for 13 yrs, let me give you some advice. Since you don't say if you already have your CDL, I'll start from that angle.
1. Avoid USTDS, they will lie to you and tell you that you'll never get a job as a trucker.
2. Before you even apply contact the companies, if you go through a driving school, you'll have to oppurtunity to meet with company recruiters. Don't be afraid to ask them if they hire ex-felons. If they don't ask them why, be wary, they will give you BS answers.
3. Even though it's been a long time, see if you can get a letter of recommendation from probation/parole.
4. At present, because the market is so flooded with out of work drivers, many will pass you by because of the felony.
5. Some company excuses:
You can't get a TWIC card - Really, research the TWIC website and find out for yourself
You can't get hazmat - Same as above
You can't get a customs bond - nice try
You can't go to Canada - Only legit excuse so far
You can't haul military loads - Depends, if they require a security clearance to haul you may be out of luck, but general military loads, no restrictions
You can't haul US Mail - No you can't work for the USPS, there is no restriction on working for an outside contractor that hauls mail
You can't haul gov't loads - Again, nice try, unless they require a security clearance to haul there are no restriction.
You can't cross state lines - Only if your still on probation/parole and even then if you have written permission you can
Well our customer requires a background check - really? is their product that sensitive that it requires that much of check, I'd love to know the company
Now with all this said, I haul containers, I have hazmat endorsements, the only reason I don't have a TWIC card is that we don't go to the Ports for me to be able to get one. I haul mail loads all the time 1st class, 2nd class, packages, etc. I've been on all but one military base within an 11 hr drive of my office: Cannon AFB, Kirtland AFB, Ellsworth AFB, FE Warren AFB, Schreiver AFB (home of Space Command/NORAD), Peterson AFB, Air Force Academy, Ft. Carson Army Base, the only one I haven't been on is Minot. I've hauled loads for the US Mint, including a load of new issue pennies (45,000 lbs of pennies), the USDA, Records and Archives. I've hauled probably a dozen loads of placarded fireworks. I've delivered to and picked up containers from: Port of Tacoma, Port Houston Barbours Cut, Port of Galveston. I've hauled HHG loads both for the military and civilian contractors. I've delivered to SuperMax at least a dozen times, I've delivered to every prison in the state of Colorado except one, I've delivered to Wyoming State Penitentary twice. I'm covered under my companies Customs Bond and it's never been an issue. So much for every excuse these companies can come up with.
In Feb. '97 I was told by a recruiter for USTDS that I should buy a shovel, because with a felony I would never drive a truck. Well, that was 13 yrs and 1.3 million miles ago.
When I was in driving school, I spoke with recruiters from Werner, Swift, and Marten. Back then, all would hire ex-felons, Werner was the most upfront about it. Now, today I've heard all kinds of excuses from companies, and I've shot myself in the foot with a few because I've called them out on their lies.
I will warn you, Fedex has a strict no hire policy regarding felonies, even if you work for one of their contractors, they don't give a reason why. -
Not putting information on an application accurately can cause you to get a DAC that reads "falsified Application or lied on application" As stated earlier burn the CDL if that happens. Usually a suspension because of "insurance" might not be a big deal as it was in a POV but don't lie on any applications.
I think you answered an ad I had run out west about a month or so ago fo Heartland and I gave you a web site to go look at. Did you check it out and fill in the questions to the "other options" button?
I'm not doing that "pre employment" application crap any more due to I now have a slightly large phone bill and none of the first 30 people I did applications on went through for either of the companies due to the massive volume of applications and I don't work for free like I just did! LOL Trucking is starting to bite on both sides of the windshield! -
Right after I started driving, the ol' lady went with me on a run, I dropped her off at the truckstop on the way back into town before I took the truck in (wasn't supposed to have a rider), she got to talking to a husband/wife team with Heartland. I gave them a call a few months later, I talked them again recently as well and it was still the same answer, if I don't already have my ministers permit for Canada they aren't interested. -
I see that you may have found other employment for awhile, which is great...
Just thought I'd mention in case this applies to someone else...Otherhalftw has it right....The current DMV printout requirement would catch the suspended license, and every company I've applied with has required one. Just today, a recruiter told me my H6 (the form in California) had to be less than 60 days old. Mine was dated 12-01-09. Luckily, that will get me into orientation and I will have 30 days to get a current one into my file.
This may or may not be pertinent, but some (maybe all) of these state forms go back even further than five years. The one I had pulled in Texas before I came to California went back at least 7 years, maybe 10.
