And who was that aimed at?
Cannot remember anyone here sneaking around illegally and cutting rates bud. Been doing it for 19yrs, up to and including 3+3+3 trailers, so I dont think I am needing to buy the "proper equipment", nor am I rate cutting at all.

I just do the mechanical detach myself, saves weight and keeps it simple for a 2 or 3 axle trailer. I have pulled plenty of hydraulic RGN's, and they are great......until they dont work!:biggrin_25513:
Not complicated at all mate. More simple than a hydro setup in my experiences. Takes me literally 2 minutes to break down or put it back together.

    Martin,

If you pull a 2 axle with flip, are there any states other than California that won't let you count that as a Tridem?

Ca is the only one IIRC, and I have taken flips out there and never been hassled. If going for a 3 axle setup, I would get a lift axle on the rear and in the middle. Flipping is easy enough after a while, but I have helped more than one guy flip an axle down when the fool went into Wy with an overweight load and a flip axle on the rear deck! Amazing how many guys are out here pulling them around that have no idea how to flip them unless a fork lift is around:biggrin_25510:
I would go for a fixed 3 axle, with lift axles and a flip neck if I was to get one.

I have been looking at mostly fixed 3 axle 50T Hyd - but no flip neck.

Knowing I have learning curve, I am just trying to get the most flexible setup that I can make some money with while a gain experience. And know I don't know how to flip an axle at this point -with or without a fork lift. But I bet if a I do it a time or two I might get the hang of it.

That's funny but no I keep them in the rack. I was just saying they tried to tell us we couldn't even have an over night bag.

Decks are fairly expensive but if it's a good trailer and the right price it's worth putting one in. Check the cross members real good to make sure they're not tweaked. I've seem guys tear a deck out and still load on the crossmembers and bend the hell out of them.

Not to start a pissing match but the guys hauling equitment on steps are rate cutters to us rgn guys, Atleast me. See stepdecks takeing oversize loads for $2.00 to $2.50 a mile when rgns are well over $4. To the guys that say outriggers are not needed i hope you never find out why they are. You can chain a machine all you want but when it decides to go its going, have seen it happen.

that is exactly what I was saying about a guy hauling six axle freight on a five axle, get the right equipment to do the job otherwise it is just like cutting rates.........

Point taken and I respect your position. That being said, being flexible is good business practice. Doing so increases your opportunities, decreases wait time, and improves your level of customer service, to name a few. However, that does not mean that you should be charging step rates for what most carriers would load on an RGN load. If you can take it on a step, good for you, charge the market rate, if it is $4/mile it's money in the bank.

Explain to me if you can permit load on 5 axles why do you need to put it on 6? I have big trailers in my fleet and I know the costs of the heavy haul business but I still haul on the least amount of axles I can get away with.

Exactly, but to many just charge it as a regular step rate and go. Hell i dont run my flatbed for what i see some of these guys pulling oversize loads with steps for. Speacialized trailers should get more plain and simple.
