Freight is a commodity, moving freight is a commodity. in most industries the Top 10 players control as much as 80% of the industry. The Top 10 trucking companies, by size or revenue, control a lot less than that. The industry needs a vast amount of consolidation.

Hope I'm not clogging up the thread, but I just wanted to say one last thing: If you feel you're being underpaid or getting mistreated or whatever the reason, now is the perfect time to go after the job, pay and working conditions that you want. Don't sell yourselves short and know your worth, plenty of great companies hiring right now. It won't be an employee market forever.

i guess knowing where all the potholes are and red light sequences on some stretches of road equals more money

I think it all boils down to respect thing to me. I've never been a job hopper (on my 4th company in almost 18 years), no accidents, 1 violation for wearing a seat belt improperly (had the shoulder strap under my arm), very good on time delivery record, ect. I know these are thing somebody with 2 years can have too. I'm not a super trucker, just think things could be done a little different for some added value on time served in the industry

This is a lot of the older drivers leave the industry prematurely....they don't feel the years they've put in equal anything of value

is it respect or is it money. its a job, what added value can a company really offer other than money.

you're barking up the wrong tree. most truckers are underpaid.. it really has nothing to do with experience
its the entire economic system, not many sectors have wages keeping up with cost of living for a very long time. and trucking has always been scraping the bottom of those charts

I understand a company driver working for company X at $0.60cpm thing and that there might be a cap and feeling of being underpaid

But this industry definitely has many avenues a driver can take to put themselves in a better paying job

A van is a van is a van but work for a company on a % that does something more specialized like oversized. Flatbed. Car hauling or ?

If you want to bump docks and get the average pay then how is that different than the person who wants to run a cash register rather than do landscaping because it’s indoors with ac and easy?

Every career has an avenue for more money and reward but you need to make a change and do something not everyone else wants to or can do

    bryan21384 Thanks this.

I'm not sure what attributes trucking use to have. I started in 2010 so I don't know what other veterans speak of.

It's kind of headed the way of consolidation...see Heartland Express. Lol. I think the smaller guys who don't things the right way are the ones that need to be exiled from the industry. Not everyone can own a company or business and it's too easy for anyone to do it.

Guys, I'm not talking making more money in different sectors of trucking, or how trucking is similar to other industries. I'm simply asking why is there not a little bit of a gap in pay between 2 years experience and 20 years experience. Call me old fashioned or whatever, but I do believe well seasoned drivers with good records to back it up should command a higher rate than someone with 2-3 years experience right out of the gate...even in just regular old trucking. In my opinion, it's disrespectful to the guys that's been driving 20 years to make the same thing as the guys with 2-3 years. That's the only point I've been trying to make. Respect the time, blood, sweat, ect that I, and guys like me have put into this industry
