Oh gosh where to begin? LOL The lengt: of time you'll be on the road and then have hometime is dependent upon the company you work for and to be blunt: freight. You see it all depends upon freight. This industry isn't about people or trucks, it's about freight. It's about getting freight from one place to another so if your company has freight that needs to get from where you're at to your home .....you go home but if they don't, you're not getting home right then.
We currently sort of keep a home lol We live in a joint home with our son in law, daughter and 3 grandsons. It's what we all enjoy currently but it could change if our son in law gets a new job and has to move.
Many teams do keep a home and have someone to keep an eye on it, others stay with family when at home, or have an RV, or check into a motel. It basically comes down to what the two of you want.
Being OTR for weeks at a time......is both fun and a pain in the hindend. You have to do laundry in truckstops, shower at truckstops, sleep in the truck, you're in a small metal rolling box with the same person every minute of every day. It can get to you. You have to learn to cook in the truck and frankly you learn to do without a lot of "stuff" we women are use to having to do those chores.
On the other hand: you meet people. You don't have to clean a house, mow a yard and if your neighbors are rotten you simply move the truck lol
When you team you're often constantly rolling. You don't shut down for your DOT 10, so you must be able to sleep while the othr person is driving. It can be difficult at times.
Currently we're on a dedicated fleet so our schedule is different than the average OTR team.
To be honest I miss OTR, I miss going someplace new, meeting people I've never seen before and probably never will again. I liked being out 3-4 weeks and coming home for 4 days. You could get stuff done. However you miss birthday parties, etc.
