Six singles plus two spares is what I run, but I don't do California. That's max chains for Washington.

Of course we run three railers on the tractor, so we have two sets of three railers, a spare set, and three singles on board.

Close, For a five axle truck in WA you need enough chains to cover 7 tires: Four drives, one drag, two spare.

Anything over five axles requires enough to cover 9 tires. Six drives, one drag, two spare.

CA only requires enough for 6 tires up to 10 tires for a twin screw: 4 drives al least, up to 8 drivers if required, 2 drags.

Ok. Just a little confused. You mentioned 6 singles and 2 spares is what you run, then said you have 2 sets of 3 railers and a spare set, and 3 singles on board.

Do you have all of these on your truck? Or just the 6 singles and 2 spares as you mentioned?

if you think your chains are putting you over weight, your doing it wrong or looking at the situation wrong. Just saying.

If you get pulled/inspected by DOT in the NON winter months are you still required to have a certain amount of chains on your truck?

CO and WA require the chains on board on certain dates. Tickets if you don't

    WA Nov.1 - April 1

    CO Sept. 1- May 31

Ok, I wasn't terribly clear. I run three railers on the tractor, and one three railer is the equivalent of two singles. So I run the EQUIVALENT of six singles and two spares, but actually have two-three railers, a single and two spares. If I break a three railer, two spares will cover that, and if I break a single, a spare will cover that.

    Clear as mud?

When you run out of chains because the fine state has you throwing chains on because they seen 3 snow flakes in the last 5 min coming down. You will wear threw them real quick. Also I'm sure you will probably have one or so fly off your truck because it wasn't tight. Keep them before you get caught without the legal amount of chains.
