No offense meant, but you are being thickheaded.
These guys told you the solution, and you are talking about burning the clutch out. First gear, you would not stall and you wouldn’t burn the clutch up by feathering.
“But Six, my instructor told me to start in 3rd...”
And your instructor FAILED you. I guarantee that he won’t fail you if you start off in first.
Failed CDL test :(

Our instructor tells us to downshift all the way to third gear before every stop, but the DMV tester says that downshifting even to 5th gear on our 10 speed is not practical and just to stop in 6th gear and then hit your splitter and put it in third before take off. Im not thickheaded, I'm doing what I am being taught. My problem is trying to get a smooth take off in third gear, because we are taught to never start off in first because at our level of driving we may not have enough time to shift all the way to 4th gear. 4th gear must be put in before making any sort of turn after a stop.

Most DMV grade on down shifting . I never heard of one telling a person how to do it. Its pass or fail.

Sounds like a 3rd party test person.

We are a tech college and the dmv testers are pretty lenient because they know our passions and goals are to drive line trucks and not a semi. They dont expect us to be driving a freight liner for a company by next week. Literally my tester didn't make much marks on his paper and is just worried about us being a safe driver with a trailer and being able to safely operate these trucks. If you can prove that then you're more than good to drive a line truck. We are taught for about 12-16 hours and then off to test.

you might be removing your foot off that clutch a little too soon. you might be, you know, like "popping" the clutch, which is causing you problems. S-L-O-W-L-Y.......BigDog Trucker and Lepton1 Thank this. -
