I don't care what your instructor teaches you. Start off in 1st high range or 2nd low range.
If you can't get the truck rolling ... This might not be the best career choice

Exactly. That’s what I meant by his listening skills. Instructor told him that do something a certain way, WHICH CAUSED HIM TO FAIL. @ZVar and others tell him a NO FAIL method and what does he do?

“Gee, maybe I should work on feathering the clutch.”

They cannot fail him just for starting in first or second. They can fail him for stalling the engine. Duh!!!

A lot of places teach that you are not to shift while in an intersection. Starting in 3rd when empty gets you through without needing to shift.

Also, as easy as it is to over rev in 1st or 2nd, it keeps them from missing a shift and hunting for a gear.

He's not getting a full CDL course, they're giving him just enough to pass the test.

We all know that we don't drive the way the CDL mills teach us. And for those that never attended a class, you probably wouldn't pass the test the way it's given. Heck, *I* probably wouldn't pass today and I went through the course.

Learn to start in 3rd. Release the clutch evenly but not TOO slowly and don't worry so much about it.

He doesn't need to drive tractor-trailer. He just needs to pass the test. Why? Only his union knows why....
