If driver fails to do pretrips and fails to keep his log book in order, I think.he totally deserves being fined.
On the other end If company sends you on the road with bad equipment, you have to refuse driving it, until they fix it.

This^^^^^. If you leave out with something simple as a push in style taillight not working or a mudflap missing, something you can easily pick up at a truck stop, fix and get reimbursed for, you deserve to fail the inspection if you get pulled in. Most people get away with it for a while and get lazy, not checking tires etc.

I document everything I fix, I will even have a forklift lift me up on a pallet to fix a light if possible. I get reimbursed and paid a minimum one hour even if it’s just fixing a tag light. I try to protect my PSP.

Driver should never be held liable for company equipment

I guess this week when I pick up a trailer missing a mudflap with five stops on it, a maintenance dept that doesn’t work nights and is 30 miles away, I should just hope for the best as I cross the scales? Get real. I carry tools, buy the mudflap, put it on and get reimbursed, plus a minimum hour pay for five minutes work. On top of that I get money for passing inspections.

You roll the dice all you want, I am making money and not waiting on breakdown or Loves to fix it.

And i guarantee if you drive by Meteor Express’s yard in Scottsboro Alabama tomorrow you will see their shop filled with trucks they are working on. That company keeps nice equipment and fixes stuff from what I can tell.

I passed by their shop in Vernon Alabama daily and they were always performing maintenance. Those trucks are all in good shape. They are well below the national threshold for failed inspections on both driver and equipment.

That's the difference right there. A driver should be compensated for making repairs to the carrier's equipment (or anything else they do outside of driving for that matter). Too many companies expect the driver to work for free. When I was a company guy I wouldn't touch anything unless I was paid for it.

Definitely. I used to fix it for free, and then a dispatcher made a smart mouth comment. From that point on, I started documenting it and getting paid. If it’s not on my pay, I tell him to resend the email to payroll. My days of doing stuff out of the kindness of my heart are over. I just happen to know the OP’s company and know they have nice equipment, head turning trucks that are clean.

Reminds me of the old adage, "Give them an inch and they'll take you a mile." So true.

If they give you bonus for clean inspection i understand reason for fine for bad one. Especially if you didn't do your PTI or if you were speeding and got bad inspection for that.
