    Hello there forum,
I've been studying here in NJ to pursue a CDL. I'm all set to take the knowledge test and get a CLP.
I failed the Ishihara color test and the examiner would not allow me to pass. I'm 51 in good physical
shape no health problems. I've been driving for years and I'm going on 3 years driving SUVs in the NYC
metro area, clean driving record etc etc and all the rest.
I can see numbers in about 2 out of 10 Ishihara pages.

Should I get another exam somewhere else to see if I can pass?

If I do pass another exam, will this likely be a problem every 2 years?

I'm feeling like I should pursue other jobs, but I want to be sure before I toss in the towel.

Thank you for any info you can share with me.

Your examiners an idiot! Are you talking about the numbers in the circles? There is no rule anywhere that I know of that says you must pass that! You just must be able to tell those three colors! Get another exam! Just make sure you tell the second examiner, About the first exam!

Many years ago I walked out of an exam about halfway through, because another idiot examiner, had no idea all about the DOT rules!

Maybe look for a non-cdl box truck driving job that doesn't require a DOT physical.
Many companies use 26 ft. box trucks or smaller that don't require a cdl or a DOT physical.

there’s no point in him doing that! I don’t remember the percentage, but a large portion of the US male population, has I think red green color defects, it’s not disqualifying if you can distinguish those three colors.

I wonder if the doctor he went to was even certified to do DOT physicals.

That's how I feel about sleep studies. Either show me where it is a DOT requirement or show me the door.

    T.Rucker and Tb0n3 Thank this.

I can't pass an Ishihara, either.

I have been continuously licensed since 1994.

I have NEVER been given an Ishihara at a DOT physical.

Usually they just point to each color bar on the eye chart, and ask me to identify the color.

Go to another DOT examiner. As long as you provide them with the same information you gave the first one, it's "second opinion", not "doctor shopping".
