As a "wannabe", I've been reading this post with great interest. Even took the time to do a search to find out what a button hook turn is. For what it's worth, I had to take my class B test twice, as well as my mc test, even though I aced every aspect during practice. I get nervous with tests, what can I say.
Now, speaking of right turns . . . . I observed one yesterday and would like some analysis from the experts.
I was behind a TT who was attempting to make a right turn. The intersection used to consist of 6 roads intersecting. However, just this year, "the powers that be", decided to take one road out of the equation on the side that the TT was trying to make the turn. They put in a bypass about 500' from the intersection. This alteration left a sharp right turn from this approach. (I'm thinking between 45-55 degree angle) There was no way for the TT to make the turn without entering the left hand turn lane of the road he was turning onto. From my position, I could not see if the lane was clear when he started the turn or not (a building was blocking my view), but I could tell that he had to stop because of a vehicle before completing the turn. I could see his passenger trying to wave the vehicle in the left turn lane to move back. The vehicle did not budge. Finally, I saw a vehicle come up on the right side of the vehicle in the LT lane and motion and "yell" to that vehicle to move back so the TT could complete the turn. The TT still ended up running the tandems up on the curb, but I honestly don't know how he could've made that turn otherwise. (Prior to the alteration of the intersection, he would have easily been able to make the turn onto the road he ended up on.) -
