Yes, that is fishy. I would talk to the DMV and see if this is the normal route, Does the tester choose the route at his/her discretion? If so is this an appropriate location for a full semi, especially with a beginning driver?

Be cordial during the inquiry, don't throw any clipboards...

The test routes are laid out by the third party tester with their examiners. There are several required items and areas that MUST be on these test routes. RXR crossing, marked clearance, multi-lane roads, various speed limits, etc etc. There are normally more that ONE test route..and then the State honcho comes down and drives the route and then the state must approve the test route. It is up to the examiner which route that the person is tested on. There are no "gatchas" on these tests and during the training, the students are trained on various parts of the course, but they are never told (against the regs) that they are on the course at the time, for all then know they are just driving. Thats one of the problem with nerves. I have tested drivers who we trained at our school and after the test ( passed or failed) they would swear that they had never been or seen places that they had been training on for weeks. This driver failed his test, he has to schedule another and go again. This is not fishy, its not a conspiracy and it happens to some of them.. I have had weak drivers pass the tests and i have had strong drivers blow the test completely and have had to even drive the truck back to the test site for one of them because they had just plain lost their minds that bad over the stresses.. It is amazing to see adults under SO much stress before these tests..

And Illinois and their governor almost single handedly destroyed the third party system. We had a guy from Illinois apply at the trucking company when we were just a company school.. He had his IL CDL and all the endorsements. It was decided by the guy giving the company orientation that he could not drive. He was offered employment if he would enroll in the school and go through the training to improve his skills.

I had him the first day in my class.. he was horrible, he had no concept of driving a combination vehicle let alone the bobtail that we drive on the first day.. he was the first student who I took to my lead instructor and told that he was not trainable and was a drag on the training time to the other students. My lead kind of scoffed and grumbled cause he didnt want to get out there with a student..

He took him out in a truck by himself and later that day agreed with my assessment. We drive on a range for a couple of days, then hit the roads in the area and the students get their training in the three weeks that the course took.....

The driver with the CDL never aquired the skills to even drive with a trailer attached and never even got off the range for the three weeks.. he never could drive a truck with enough skill to even get out of the training range...

I failed my driving test because a pickup had to slow down on the cross street while I finished getting through the intersection. I did not see the pickup when I started to cross the intersection, and the examiner said anytime a vehicle has to slow down because of the truck, that it would be a failed test. This intersection was the last intersection I had to cross to finish the test.

It was a learning experience, and you just get to know what the examiner is going to do. My school, a community college, would let you retest as many times as you needed with their truck. You can't find better CDL schools than at the community colleges.....they are great in my opinion. And I have never had a bad word about a community college program.

For the private school to not allow you to retest is really bad, and their name should be published on here, to give them the bad credit that they deserve. :biggrin_25516:

if the intersection is clear when you start your maneuver, they cannot(should not) be able to force you to fail

    What's he supposed to do?

    Stop? That's wrong.

    Speed up? That's wrong.

Maintain and continue as progressing. Most logical.

It would seem from some of the stories that folks are saying, these examiners need to be quality checked with a "ringer" and see how they react.

Actually the tester was smarter than you think. I did this also when I trained students. You don't stop a truck in the middle of the intersection. Even if you do cut off a vehicle, you complete the turn and then stop, if you have to stop. You create a road hazard when you sit in the middle of a intersection.

this might be alittle too late for you, since its been a week but for someone else, I dont see a way to do this for free. I think the best bet would be to find a third party tester that rents out his own truck. As far as the test goes, I went to school last year and was told you can retest but it will cost you. The tester does not work for the school, the school has to pay them to test you, you pay the school for books, testing, driving, fuel, class room and such, if they had to plan on retests for every student they would have to charge more for the class and to keep the cost down they dont do that. They do how ever have to plan the time for each student to test, and after three weeks of school not everybody is going to make it to test day, so there should be time to retest. The retest would be with the class that started a week after you did ( taking the place of the student that didnt make it to test day for that class ). My point being, be mad at the school for not retesting but not for wanting more money, dirving those trucks and paying for testers is not cheap. As for the fail point, I was told that even at the point of no return so to speak, if an other vehicle has to stop or get out of your way for you , you fail no matter if its their fault or not. What I was told at school was to stop at all intersections, even if there is no traffic, and wait for the light, that way this exact thing can not happen.
