One two three four moving now are we? 5 six seven.... Most company trucks will top at 9 or 10 speeds. But you have plenty more with a 18. After you get used to it, you will see it's strengths in situations that will stall a company 10 or 9er.
Don't take a auto truck to test CDL, they will slap a restriction against you to no manual trucks which I believe is a forever situation in trucking. Ive run autos and Ive run some manuals with splits on them before. Autos make me lazy.
I had mine in reverse for a two point dock in Maryland for my class A road trip that was a trip through construction hell done essentially perfectly at that time. Out of a 100 score tree two points was not enough to fail. First and reverse in the transtar (Roughly 73' era) was about a half inch apart on the tree. That one was a 8 with low gear, technically a 9 speed...
Don't give up. Anyone can master anything given enough time practicing with it be 8, 18 or 80 gears. -
Sorry if this is offensive but you can do it, it is just an excuse you can't.
When I would do road tests, I would get this all the time, "I never drove a 13 speed" or "wow this is difficult" before they even started the truck when it isn't.
My last test was with a guy who drove 300k with an autoshift and trained on a 9 speed, he was petrified of the 18 sp in the truck (he was actually shaking when he discovered what it was) but after twenty minutes, he mastered it, he's been with me for 6 months so far and refuses to give up the 18 sp - he loves it
The trick is to learn the pattern and train yourself to remember which gear you are in, you could master a 13 speed in about 5 minutes or so. Believe me I've done this a lot, I was a temp driver and had to drive any truck the customer put me in, 6, 7, 9, 10, 13,15, 18 and split gear boxes, I always used that trick - learn the pattern and remember what gear you're in. -

All the years I've driven trucks and I never have driven an 18 ...... Maybe I would flunk a drive test ???? Idk ......
FLguy777 Thanks this. -
sounds like this company lacks any patience and you are probably better off not working for them anyway. I went from only Auto experience(except for school where I drove a 10) right to 13 speed. Thankfully my new company let me take the truck out by myself for half a day to get the feel for it. Worked out great! Now I'd be worried if I had to drive a 10. Things will work out for you. Keep your chin up! God bless!
