Backing up should be a real smooth thing with real slow steering
wheel movement. If your working the wheel like crazy your over
correcting and then having to play catch-up. Try slowing down
a little, just get the trailer to start moving were you want it, then
follow it slowly, correcting back and forth a few degrees at a time.mockingbird and john10204 Thank this. -
I really am not trying to be rude here, but what kind of school charges you 6100 and doesn't teach you to properly back up a truck? That's 90% of what you are going to be doing when you hit a receiver or a shipper.
So far you have told us you can't back up period..
I am starting to think those that posted you need to find another profession are right. -
If I could calm down, then I would slow down. This is at the end of the test when I am all worked up. These examinors do not make staying calm easy.

Realize this thread is 17 pages long and have had further training at the school. Although I am not backing up perfectly, I am getting better. I believe th biggest problem is test anxiety causing me to overcorrect. If I can remember to use small corrections, I should do much better.Last edited: Oct 29, 2010

I know what you mean, when I tested they followed me around in
a golf cart yelling out directions. So between them and the faded
paint on the ground it was bad. I failed the first time, I even parked
in the wrong place on the jack knife park they had me do lol. Is there
a way you can practice on the actual test site ? Thats what I finally
ended up doing for $50 an hour but it worked. Past with flying colors
the second time. -
We'll see on Tuesday.

Onthefence....This is what I would do..so take it with a grain of salt. I have experienced anxious moments with different tests in my life as well. There is nothing wrong with a little small talk with your examiner before the exam followed by telling him you are nervous, not with the fact that you are going to be driving this big piece of machinery, but that you will be observed doing so.
I am quite sure the examiner is experienced with drivers that are nervous behind the wheel. Sharing that with the examiner will help to take the edge off of your nervousness so you can concentrate on your driving. As hard as it may be, try to put him out of your mind when you get behind the wheel.
Best of luck!!! I think sometimes the best people turn out to be those who struggle the most to reach their goal. -
I agree, Good Advice
